Shogun's the cast includes characters based on real people, including Anna Sawai's Lady Mariko, who is based on Hosokawa Gracia. In ShogunToda Mariko is the cruel companion of Lord Toranaga, a lord forced to clash with his rivals among his fellow nobles. Seemingly married for work instead of love, Lady Mariko still has a lot to offer, especially when it comes to her education. Besides being a devout Christian, Lady Mariko's multilingual training allows her to translate John Blackthornehe finally became close to her.
Gracia, also known as Hosokawa Garasha, was born into the Akechi family in 1563 but eventually converted to Christianity and accepted the name of baptism. What happened to the real man Mariko
Gracia ordered her servant to help her commit suicide at the age of 38
…not clear though ShogunLady Mariko's version will follow the same fate as her historical inspiration…
With Lady Mariko's wisdom and intelligence, she will continue to be an important figure on King Toranaga's side throughout. Shogun. However, it is not clear that ShogunLady Mariko's version will follow the same fate as her historical inspirationwhich was very painful. As Gracia finds herself caught between the Eastern Army (Tokugawa Ieyasu's loyalists) and the Western Army (Ishida Mitsunari's loyalists), she is ordered by Ishida Mitsunari to act as a hostage in an attempt to recruit rivals to his side. Instead, Gracia ordered her servant to help her commit suicide at the age of 38.
Although there were conflicting reports about whether someone had ordered Gracia's death, the consequences of her death were evident. His fate damaged Ishida Mitsunari's kidnapping plans, especially with potential friends who were also Christian believers. Mitsunari eventually lost the Battle of Sekigahara, leading Ieyasu to create the Tokugawa shogunate.and his family ruled Japan until 1868. These changes marked an important period in Japan as the region experienced great economic growth. If you consider Shogun's Lord Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, it will be interesting to see what elements of Japanese history play into the show.
What Happened to Anna Sawai's Lady Mariko in Shogun Season 1
Mariko made an honorable sacrifice to advance Toranaga's plan
Lady Mariko has one of the most memorable moments of the first season celebrated in episode 9 “Crimson Sky”. Mariko arrives in Osaka but is kidnapped and tries to fight her way out but to no avail. This comes after Mariko reunites with her teenage son, telling him that if he tries to walk in a shameful way, she will abandon him as a mother. Despite this, Mariko does what is right to further Lord Toranaga's detailed plan for the shogunate. Mariko is about to commit seppuku and is supported by Blackthorne when Ishido arrives and gives him permission to go to Osaka.
After all this, Yabushige betrays Blackthorne and Mariko by sneaking the assassins into town. They hide in a store house where the killers have planted an explosive device to gain entry. Rather than hide, Mariko stands in front of the door and accepts death, which creates a boundary between Ishido and Ochiba-no-kata and serves as the last important step in Lord Toranaga's plan. Mariko is undoubtedly the best character Shogun season 1 and hopefully it will be combined with a flashback or add an atmosphere element to season 2.
