Kaos season 1 spoilers ahead!
Chaos Season 1 may have broken hearts everywhere by killing off Dennis the Cat, but one small detail proves the animal is still being saved in season 2. Reimagining Greek mythology, Netflix Chaos it thrives because it combines the lovely, sad and unwelcome parts of popular stories. While most of the series leans towards a darkly comedic tone, a few moments stand out as emotional rather than funny. Chaos The end of season 1 includes one of the most devastating moments.
After Zeus calls a meeting, he announces that he will punish each of the gods for their betrayal. For most of them, this means measuring the waters of the Meander, but Prometheus receives a crueler punishment than that. Zeus kills his cat, Dennis, an act that breaks the hearts of viewers who were close to him. Although Dennis's death has a profound effect on both Zeus and Dionysus, death does not have to be permanent. A moment in the first episode of Kaos gives hope that Dennis the Cat might survive in season 2.
The Significance of Dennis The Cat's Death in Kaos Season 1
Zeus Killing Dennis At The End Of Kaos Season 1 Talks About His Lack Of Personality
One of the biggest twists Chaos season 1 is that Zeus was born as a human rather than a god. This new background explains many aspects of his behavior, especially his killing of Dennis the Cat. Despite his bravery, the god of thunder's past makes him deeply insecure. His arrogant personality and need to control may have grown out of his previous lack of power. Thus, Zeus cannot allow Dionysus to love anyone else, including a cat. Without the attention of the young god, the god of thunder would have little power to deceive his son.
Rather than seeing love as a positive and beneficial force, Zeus sees any human emotion as a liability that can harm him and his family.
In addition, the moment when Zeus kills Dennis the Cat can be seen as his final rejection of humanity. Earlier in the series, Prometheus reminds Zeus of the power of love, trying to change the way he sees his family and the people who rule over them. However, Zeus sincerely rejects this idea. Rather than seeing love as a positive and beneficial force, Zeus sees any human emotion as a liability that could harm him and his family, and he tries to force this idea on Dionysus by killing Dennis.
In the end, Zeus' plan backfires, giving Dionysus a powerful reason to fight his father. He no longer cares about his father's approval because of the betrayal. Instead, he wants revenge because his father took away the one he loved more than anything else.
The Story of Prometheus' Dog in Kaos Episode 1 Reveals the Key to Saving Dennis
Zeus Brought His Dog Back to Life Through the Power of Love
Zeus killing Dennis the Cat took him from an unlikable bully to a villain with no compassion for anyone but himself, and nothing. Chaos introduced in season 2 could change that. However, there is hope that Dionysus' and the audience's grief over losing Dennis will not be permanent. In the first episode of Chaos, Prometheus reminds Zeus that he once brought his dog back to life through the power of his love. This incident may be the key to Dionysus saving Dennis Chaos season 2.
Zeus seems to have a low capacity for love, which may have diminished as he has been a god for a long time. However, it seems unlikely that, even in his best years, the god of thunder loved his dog more than Dionysus loved Dennis the Cat. He had no responsibility to take care of Dennis, but Dionysus fed him, welcomed him, carried him in a bag, caressed him, introduced him to everyone, and gave him great love. He treated the cat as his child instead of as a pet. If anyone has enough love to resurrect his pet from the dead, it's Dionysus.
Dennis The Cat's Death Raises Questions Kaos Season 2 Needs To Answer
Kaos Season 1 Didn't Explain How The Afterlife Works For Animals
While Prometheus' story about Zeus's dog offers hope for Dennis the Cat, it also raises many questions Chaos season 2 needs to answer. This scene provides zero details on how Zeus raised his dog from the dead. It is unclear whether he entered the underworld like Orpheus Chaos season 1 or if he uses some form of necromancy ritual. These are the big questions that the next season needs to answer if they want to continue Dennis' story:
-
How did Zeus raise his dog from the dead?
-
Is there an afterlife for pets?
-
Where is the soul of Dennis the Cat?
-
How would Dionysus find it?
-
Do the Gods eat the souls of animals, or, or just humans?
Considering the hashtag #JusticeForDennis started popping up on social media related to the show, there's clear love for the beloved feline. Hopefully, creator Charlie Covell will consider that when writing the script for the next season and bring Dennis back.
