Star Wars: The Clone Wars features a phenomenal voice cast, many of whom will be well known from other projects – and some of whom have moved on to portray their characters in live-action. Even those who have not returned – such as Ashley Eckstein, who has been replaced by Rosario Dawson – remain heavily involved with the Star Wars franchise. George Lucas and Dave Filoni really did transform careers when they chose to bring people into their hit animated Star Wars TV show.
Given that’s the case, viewers will hardly be surprised to know there are a lot of familiar voices in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Here’s your ultimate guide to the voice cast of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, focusing in on the main characters. A final section gives you all you need to know about the supporting cast.
14 Matt Lanter as Anakin Skywalker
For many, Matt Lanter is best known as the animated voice of Anakin Skywalker, but he’s also had a lot of success acting in live-action. Before The Clone Wars Lanter had recurring roles on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Monk, and Heroes. However, Lanter’s career really started to take off once he took on the role of Anakin Skywalker. He had main roles in multiple live-action television shows, including playing Liam Court in the CW reboot of 90210 which Lanter was a part of from 2009 to 2013. More recently Lanter starred on the short-lived NBC show Timeless where he played Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan.
While Lanter doesn’t look much like Hayden Christensen, his voice was able to build upon Christensen’s live-action performance of Anakin Skywalker. Hayden Christensen says he’s indebted to the Clone Wars version of Anakin, feeling the portrayal really helped flesh his character out. Lanter also made the jump to live-action in the Star Wars galaxy when he cameoed in The Mandalorian season 1, episode 6, playing a New Republic guard.
13 James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Plo Koon
James Arnold Taylor was an accomplished voice actor before he took over as the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars; in fact, Taylor is one of only three cast members of The Clone Wars to have also worked on the 2-D Star Wars: The Clone Wars from 2003. Since then Taylor has voiced Master Obi-Wan in multiple Star Wars projects, most recently Tales of the Jedi and the video game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. A gifted mimic, Taylor has the ability to essentially copy any voice he’s heard, which is why his portrayal of Obi-Wan sounds so similar to Ewan McGregor’s version of the character.
Beyond Star Wars Taylor has had many successful voice-acting roles with Lego DC as Barry Allen/The Flash, and Ratchet in multiple Ratchet and Clank titles, and as Johnny Test in the show of the same title. Despite his success in animation and voice-over work, Taylor seemingly has no interest in acting in live-action, which his acting credits being less than ten, and some of those include appearances based on his voice-acting roles. Considering how much Taylor loves the characters of Obi-Wan and Plo Koon, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him eventually cameo in a Star Wars title.
12 Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka Tano is one of the few characters that didn’t have to be reimagined for animation because Dave Filoni created the character specifically for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This allowed for Ashley Eckstein’s portrayal of Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan to feel like a breath of fresh air and allowed for audiences to see a new side of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi through their interactions with Ahsoka. Eckstein has been the voice of Ahsoka since 2008 and recently reprised the role in Tales of the Jedi, in which three episodes focused on different parts of Ahsoka’s life.
Despite Ashley Eckstein’s amazing tenure as the Togruta Jedi, she was recast in favor of Rosario Dawson for live-action. Eckstein has been very supportive of Dawson’s casting and is excited for Ahsoka’s story to continue, even if she’s not playing her. While Eckstein is best known for playing Ahsoka, she has other acting credits, both in live-action and voice work. In recent years, most of her credits have been in voice acting, but there’s hope that she will cameo in the upcoming Ahsoka Disney+ series. Eckstein has been tight-lipped about it, but an Eckstein cameo would be a great way to further honor the actor who brought Ahsoka to life for so long.
11 Catherine Taber as Padmé Amidala
Catherine Taber is a seasoned voice actor who has credits across multiple franchises and has much success in doing voice work for video games. In addition to voicing Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Taber has also voiced Padmé’s daughter Leia Organa in the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game. She narrated the audiobook for E.K. Johnston’s novels centered on Padmé, Queen’s Shadow, Queen’s Peril, and Queen’s Hope, and returned to the franchise to provide additional voices for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6.
10 Tom Kane as Yoda, Admiral Yularen, and Narrator
A professional voice actor, Tom Kane has a long resume that includes parts like Professor Utonium in The Powerpuff Girls and Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Kane provided not only the voices of Yoda and Admiral Yularen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars but also served as the narrator. Unfortunately, Tom Kane suffered a stroke in November 2020 which affected his speaking abilities. It was later announced that the stroke would mean an early retirement for Kane, with his last acting credits coming in 2022, in the Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga video in which he voiced Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, and Qui-Gon Jinn.
9 Dee Bradley Baker as The Clones
Dee Bradley Baker may be one of the few voice actors from The Clone Wars still working full-time on a Star Wars project. As the voice of all clone troopers, Baker may have had the most lines than any other actor on this list. Not only did Baker adapt and slightly change his voice and delivery for all of the major clones like Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Fives, Waxer, Boil, and Echo, but also had to reimagine the clone voices for Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
In The Bad Batch, Baker plays five of the six main characters. All of the members of Clone Force 99 are mutant clones, meaning their their voices are slightly different. It isn’t Baker’s first time playing multiple characters either. He has hundreds of acting credits, almost all of which are for voice work. On shows like Phineas and Ferb where Baker voiced Perry the Platypus, he also provided additional voices. While The Bad Batch will be ending with season 3, it hopefully won’t be the last audiences have heard of Dee Bradley Baker as the clones.
8 Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze
An American actress best known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica, The Fearing Mind, and The Education of Max Bickford, Katee Sackhoff voiced would-be Mandalorian ruler Bo-Katan Kryze in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The actress has become synonymous with the role, returning for Star Wars Rebels and ultimately portraying Bo-Katan in live-action in The Mandalorian. Given Lucasfilm’s plans for this era, it’s clear her journey has only just begun.
7 Ian Abercrombie as Chancellor Palpatine
An English actor best known for his live-action roles in Seinfeld and Star Trek: Voyager, Abercrombie lent his voice to Chancellor Palpatine for the first few seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars but sadly passed away before the show was over. Despite his death, Abercrombie’s voice can be heard posthumously in flashbacks in The Clone Wars seasons 5 and 6, a good way of honoring the voice-actor who had brought Palpatine to life.
6 Tim Curry as Chancellor Palpatine
Abercrombie was replaced by celebrated live-action Tim Curry (Clue, The Rocky Horror Picture Show). He voiced Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Clone Wars seasons 5 and 6. Curry’s time in the Star Wars galaxy only lasted 10 episodes, but hopefully he will return.
5 Matthew Wood as General Grievous and Battle Droids
Star Wars: The Clone Wars was the beginning of Matthew Wood’s career as a voice-actor; he started as a sound engineer for Lucasfilm, only to be hired as the voice for the Separatists’ Battle Droids, famous for their “Roger, roger” response. Wood has gone on to provide additional voices in other films like The Emoji Movie and Knives Out. Within Star Wars Wood also provided his voice to the live-action General Grievous in Star Wars Episode III—Revenge of the Sith and to Bib Fortuna in The Mandalorian. Wood recently reprised his role as the Battle Droids for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6.
4 Corey Burton as Count Dooku, Cad Bane, and Ziro the Hutt
A professional voice-actor who often does sound-alikes for Disney, Corey Burton has hundreds of voice-acting credits. In Star Wars he’s mostly known for his portrayal of Separatist leader, Count Dooku, most recently providing his voice in 2022 for Tales of the Jedi. In addition, Burton voiced two other prominent villains, Cad Bane and Ziro the Hutt. Burton has gone on to voice Cad Bane in different Star Wars projects like The Bad Batch and The Book of Boba Fett. While Burton did not physically portray the bounty hunter, he did provide the voice.
3 Sam Witwer as Darth Maul and The Son
Best known for live-action roles in Supergirl, Smallville, and Battlestar Galactica, Witwer has portrayed multiple characters in various Star Wars animated TV shows. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Witwer played the living embodiment of the dark side known as the Son, introduced in the Mortis arc. Filoni later brought Witwer back to voice Darth Maul, and for many Witwer’s portrayal is the reason they love Palpatine’s failed Sith apprentice. Witwer’s Maul was emotional, reckless, and menacing, and Witwer reprised the role in Star Wars Rebels – culminating in the phenomenal episode “Twin Suns,” in which Darth Maul finally died at Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hands.
Witwer’s likeness and voice were used for the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game, where he portrayed Starkiller, Darth Vader’s own apprentice – and his personal assassin. While The Force Unleashed is not considered canon, there’s a lot of demand for Starkiller to somehow be incorporated into the Disney era. In the meantime, Witwer continues to make live-action cameos, appearing as recently as 2022 in Andor. It surely won’t be long until he turns up again.
2 Nika Futterman as Asajj Ventress
Nika Futterman brought to life the apprentice of Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Dathomirian female was one of the most compelling characters in The Clone Wars because of her strong character arc, which took her from simple antagonist to vengeful Nightsister, and she ultimately found she did not need anyone else to give her identity. Futterman has many other voice-acting credits, most notably Omnia in Winx Club and Chum Chum from Fanboy & Chum Chum.
