The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has finally provided an answer to why the iconic hero Link can’t speak. Over the past forty years, many theories have been passed around trying to explain why the iconic video game character rarely, if ever, speaks. It is only in the last entry in the Seldom franchise that a story-related answer is finally provided.
One commonly accepted reason why link is shown to barely speak is simply due to the fact that He has been the player character in countless games, only serving as an avatar For people to project themselves on. However, in Echoes of wisdomPlayers instead take on the role of Princess Zelda to save Link and the Kingdom of Hyrule. Despite the shift, Link still doesn’t talk about the game, leaving only more questions that finally have some answers.
Why Link doesn’t speak in Echoes of Wisdom
The answer is found in Luberry’s diary
The Answer to why Link can’t speak can be found in Lueberry’s diary In Luberry’s workshop. Reading further in the first entry reveals that Lueberry was attacked by monsters while traveling through the forest, and ended up being saved by Link while running some test with what he refers to as the “let crystal.”

Lueberry then discovers that Link was among a group of children in Suthorn Village who fell into one of the many mysterious rifts that have sprung up across Hyrule. All those who fell into the peaks were able to somehow miraculously return home safely, but they all came back changed, each of them lost something. Although it is not specified what exactly each child lost, Lueberry does mention that Link lost his voice while trapped in the riftrendering him unable to speak.
What about versions of Link from other games?
The mysteries have yet to be solved
unfortunately, Previous games in the Seldom Franchises do not usually provide explanations As to why their versions of Link cannot speak. However, there is a similar diary moment in Breath of the wild Which mentions what Link can’t talk into BOTW. It can be assumed that something similar may have happened to other versions of Link, while others may have been born mute or simply chose not to speak much. Perhaps only time will tell if the reasons for the other links not being able to speak will finally be revealed.
The reason why Link couldn’t speak was a big mystery in the Seldom Franchise for many years. While there aren’t answers to this question for all versions of Link, the fact that an answer was revealed for one of them is incredible, and provides further insight into what may have happened to versions of Link from other games. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has provided theorists with an intriguing answer that is both exciting and quite horrifying to think about.
