ONE Zachary Levi The film that flopped at the box office has now become a global hit on Netflix. Overall, 2024 has had its ups and downs in terms of box office performance. The year began with the February release that would become one of the biggest box office failures of the year: Argyle. Argyle was not only panned by critics, but lost millions of dollars while grossing $96.2 million on an estimated budget of $200 million. This was not a good start to the year, leaving a lukewarm box office on a weekend in early 2024.
Since then, the box office has increased greatly in 2024. Family films have been a big part of this year’s box office, with the critically acclaimed Inside Out 2 accepting the no. 1 place at the general box office. Other family-friendly hits in this year’s global box office top 10 include Despicable Me 4, Panda Kung Fu 4and Beetle juice Beetle juice. Levi also got his chance to make a family film in 2024. While it wasn’t as fiscally successful as some of these other titles, the film has now gained popularity on a streaming platform.

Our opinion on the success of Harold and The Purple Crayon on Netflix
Harold’s audience was always on his side
While it’s notable for a box office bomb to become a streaming hit, it’s not entirely surprising in the case of Harold and the Purple Pencil. Although they didn’t go to the cinema in large numbers, the film’s audience has always been its biggest supporters. Despite the abysmal critical score, the Popcornmeter audience of Harold and the Purple Pencil stands at 91% universally positive. So, even though the film’s audience is small, those who like the film are really enjoying it, a trend that could grow (or worsen) as more people have the chance to see the film on Netflix.
