Originally released in 2017, Mindhunter remains one of Netflix's best shows, warmly received by critics and audiences alike. The series was produced by David Fincher (Fight Club, The social network)who also directed a significant number of episodes during the series' two seasons, and also essentially served as showrunner. The show's take on the creation of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s was compelling, gritty, and featured incredible performances on every level.
Unfortunately, Mindhunter was canceled after just the first two seasons, despite Fincher's desire to continue the series and the public's overwhelming clamor for more. After years of no positive news and essentially radio silence, David Fincher finally explained why Mindhunter was cancelled, revealing that it was simply too expensive for Netflix to be a viable investment.
Inevitably, following its cancellation, Mindhunter Fans have been trying to find a suitable replacement to scratch the true crime itch. Luckily, Netflix already has another show available to watch right now that can fill the Mindhunter gap: the underrated series, Aquarium.

What helps Aquarium What stands out among other true crime shows and movies is that it takes a real-life crime, with real people, and mixes it with historical fiction. The series features a fictional Los Angeles detective navigating the rise of Charles Manson and his cult in the 1960s.. By doing this, Aquarium can create a gripping narrative that allows viewers to get a better look at how the Manson cult rose to prominence.
Manson is arguably one of the most famous cult leaders in American history, and he never killed anyone, with his followers committing the murders for him. Aquarium takes a behind-the-scenes look at how Charles Manson was able to build his cult and eventually make them do his bidding, including the murder of actress Sharon Tate.

As Mindhunter'The very vocal fan base - and countless podcasts - have proven that a good true crime show can be incredibly addictive. Fincher's show captured that magic and it's a shame it never got more seasons on Netflix. It can also be difficult to find a replacement for it, given its high quality and cooling. Aquarium could help fill that gap as it delves into the psyche of Charles Mansonand a variety of his followers throughout the series.
Nothing will ever be able to replace Mindhunter entirely, of course. It's one of the best series on Netflix and a gold standard for the true crime genre. Still, there's a lot to like Aquariumand David Duchovny's central role is on par with the work done by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany in Mindhunter, and it could be the perfect way for fans of Fincher's work to dive back into a similar world. At the same time, the underrated show is unique enough that it doesn't need to live solely as a stand-in for Mindhunter.
