There are many hidden NPCs and encounters in Baldur's Gate 3. While many playthroughs often exceed 100 hours of gameplay, it is nearly impossible for a player to discover everything the game has to offer. With Larian patch updates adding more and more to the game over time, BG3 has one of the most extensive worlds in gaming history.
Baldur's Gate 3 is heavily based on Dungeons and Dragons, and Larian captured the creative element of its inspiration, allowing players to complete quests and progress through the game in many different ways. One of the game's Act 2 missions is usually completed in a very straightforward manner. However, taking the time to explore it further may reveal some hidden traditions. It also involves a completely unique character that some players may have never heard of.
Players can talk to Lyrthindor without realizing it
Lyrthindor is not found much in Baldur's Gate 3
The name "Lyrthindor" will probably be unfamiliar to many Baldur's Gate 3 players. This is because players generally won't get much incentive to find it, and if they do, they won't know exactly what they're looking for. He is directly linked to Yurgir, the orthon found in the Gauntlet of Shar, "Raphael's Old Enemy". Players will often fight Yuurgir or convince him to kill his minions, his displacer beast, and then himself. However, they can also offer to take a look at the temple to help break Yugirr's deal.
Players can learn snippets of information about Lyrthindor by talking to the rats around Shar's Gauntlet. They will probably notice that the rats in this area act very strangely, with those that run around the temple telling them that it does not belong there. What they may not realize is that when they talk to any of these rats, they are actually talking to Lyrthindor himself.
Lyrthindor is found in a hidden area in Shar's Challenge
Lyrthindor will only appear in its original form if the player kills several swarms of rats
Players must find Lyrthindor after speaking with Yurgir. This requires speaking to a rat found at the bottom of the Statue of Shar in the middle of the temple, which can be reached by climbing down two craggy rocks.
Shortly after, a mouse will appear and, when spoken to, will tell the player that Lyrthindor's fragmented memories are scattered among the rats, and warns the player not to harm them. If the player decides to attack anyway, another swarm of rats will appear in their place and begin the battle. Once they are defeated, more rats will appear, some with different abilities.
Players don't need much strategy in this fight as, unsurprisingly, all of the rats have very little HP. However, a good tactic to end the battle quickly is to cast spiritual guardians, and wait for the rats to enter your radius.
After the rats are defeated, one man will remain in their place - this is Lyrthindor. He will scold the player for ruining his plan and ask why they didn't listen to the rats who told them not to attack. The player will then not be able to dissuade you from attacking them.
As seen in Video by YannimalGRhe has some powerful necrotic damage attacks, he is no match for a full party. Upon defeat, he drops a Justiciar's Shield, which grants the bearer the ability to cast darkness around him, much like a Justiciar's scimitar.
Finding Lyrthindor gives players another alternative to the fight with Yurgir
There isn't really a loophole in Raphael's deal
As is probably obvious from his appearance and loot, Lyrthindor is a Dark Justiciar. Although many players assume that there is a gap in Yurgir's contract and that the line "leave no judge alive to obey"actually refers to anyone whoever heard Yugirr's song - including him and his minions, actually means he is imprisoned because Lyrthindor is still alive. Killing Lyrthindor will break Yurgir's contract, allowing the player to solve his quest without killing him, but Raphael will quickly pull him into another one.
Speaking to Lyrthindor with the "Speak with Dead" spell after defeating him will allow the player to ask some questions about his history, where he will possibly reveal that in fact it was Raphael who initially helped him escape Yurgir. Something interesting to mention is that he will mention the search for “oblivion” and the search for Shar after losing his wife and daughter due to a “plague”.
This is extremely similar to Ketheric Thorm's backstory, which could have been why Lyrthindor was inclined to join Ketheric's army of Dark Justiciars, although the player cannot ask Lyrthindor his opinion of him. Players who don't like – or don't want to follow – Raphael may prefer this path.
While Yugir still ends up in the House of Hope, this means players don't have to do Raphael's dirty work for him. Although breaking Yurgir's contract is what should lead the player to find Lyrthindor, they can still fight him after Yurthindor dies. Lyrthindor is a rather obscure character in Baldur's Gate 3, and some players may not have been able to find it.
