This post contains a PREVIEW for TVA #1
Spider-Gwen technically it is now part of the UCM canon, albeit in a rather complex way. Following the events of Loki In Season 2, Tom Hiddleston's titular God of Mischief destroyed the Temporal Loom and freed several timelines. This act of sacrifice led to a new era for the Time Variance Authority, under the leadership of B-15 and Agent Mobius, to monitor and protect all of these new timelines. However, it looks like they've also brought some new faces on board, like their new recruit Ghost-Spider, aka Spider-Gwen.
As seen in the new preview of TVA #1 put Loki Season 2 writer Katharyn Blair and artist Pere Pérez, Spider-Gwen is now officially part of the Time Variance Authority, having received their assistance following her recent displacement from her home timeline of Earth-65. Likewise, the new preview confirms that the TVA is the same MCU version seen in the live-action series:
Referencing the events of Loki Seasons 1 and 2, this definitely feels like a first for Marvel, offering what appears to be a quasi-canonical series with connections to both the Marvel Universe of comics and the MCU, hence the recruitment of Spider-Gwen.
Spider-Gwen was recruited by the TVA
A displaced variant with no initial timeline
In the new preview, Miss Minutes, Mobius and B-15 are shown recalling the events of Loki Season 2 and how they entered a new era for TVA, as it was presented in 2024 Deadpool and Wolverine. Likewise, previous comic book series like Spider-Gwen: The Ghost Spider showed Ke Huy Quan's obstetrician serving as Gwen's handler, who has been helping her adjust to her new life on the comics' Earth-616, as she is currently unable to return home to Earth-65. Now, Gwen appears to be a definite TVA agent, thigh holster and all.
“It appears that the new rule established in this new series is that the TVA and its agents can operate with characters and timelines from the comics just as much as those from the live-action MCU…”
Since the TVA exists outside of time and space, with access to multiple timelines and realities, it follows that its canonical status can afford to be a little more fast and loose, ambiguous, flexible, nebulous and all of the above. That said, it appears the new rule established in this new series is that the TVA and its agents can operate with characters and timelines from the comics just as much as those from the live-action MCU.. It's a very interesting perspective, which brings up some very intriguing possibilities.
Are we one step closer to a live-action Spider-Gwen?
TVA makes everything a bit complicated
Keeping the above ideas in mind, it's not a stretch to imagine the TVA serving as a primary vehicle for bringing established comic book characters into the MCU, like Spider-Gwen.. However, one must also keep in mind Sony's animated film Spider-Verse films, her own Spider-Gwen voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, who also plays the MCU's Kate Bishop, and her own multiversal connections to the MCU, which could certainly make things quite confusing. Regardless, the concept still remains in theory, whether it's Spider-Gwen or any other comic book character Marvel Studios wants to instantly bring into the MCU. TVA can help make this happen.
TVA #1 will go on sale December 18th from Marvel Comics.
