As popular as the musical Evil is in reality, the Marvel Universe has its own version of the series focusing on the young hero Wiccanson of Scarlet Witch, as the main character. Music fans everywhere are fascinated by the film adaptation of Evilbut on Earth-616, everything revolves around Billy Kaplan’s version of the classic tale.
This bombastic reality twist was delivered in a blink-and-you-miss-it Easter egg in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #15 by Ryan North and Erica Henderson. The issue takes Doreen (the titular Rodent heroine) and her associates to New York City to secure updates for Squirrel Girl’s heroic crew. When the plan goes wrong and leads to the kidnapping of microchipped animals, the wild residents of the Central Park Zoo are released to invade Broadway. As the animals go crazy, posters for various shows are seen in the background, parodying or spoofing various pieces of the real world. Laughter is won by Opera Fantomex and Les Mizebut the highlight among them is one Evil– voiced inspirational poster Wiccanrecreating the show’s iconic poster, replacing Wiccan’s smirk as her boyfriend Hulkling whispers in her ear.
‘WICCAN’ Is Marvel’s Own Version of The Wicked Broadway Musical
Destiny brought Evil and Wicca together at the perfect time
The original Evil premiered on Broadway in 2003 and was a loose adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The play serves as a prequel to the classic story The Wizard of Ozbut told from the perspective of Elphaba (the so-called ‘wicked witch’) during her youth. As the poster highlights, the story reveals the surprising friendship with Glinda, the good witch, before society’s unfair demonization alters Elphaba’s path. Evil was a smash hit, and after more than two decades, it’s finally being adapted in a two-part feature film franchise.
It’s lucky that Marvel has its own Evil-Wiccan-inspired show, especially after Billy skyrocketed in popularity since his starring role in the Marvel film Agatha all the time. If Wiccan it’s something similar Evilpresumably focuses on Billy and Tommy’s relationship (especially since many critics see Evil as a queer coded program). One also has to wonder if the entire Broadway scene is entirely influenced by Marvel heroes (perhaps the biggest show is The Panther King?). Wiccan may be a one-off joke, but it’s hard not to wonder if Marvel could take note of a real world Wiccan in the future.
What else is playing on Marvel’s Broadway?
It would be fun to explore the real-life story
It’s impossible to talk about Marvel Comics and Broadway musicals without first thinking Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Or, more accurately, the many real-life problems facing the Spider-Man Broadway show. With this suggestion that Broadway exists within the Marvel Universe, could the comics (or films) show how this disaster happened in a world where Spider-Man himself watched it all happen in real time?
Broadway is full of blockbusters that get their own film adaptations, so there’s no doubt that these tales could blend seamlessly with the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Wicca’s opinion Evil was lucky enough to have both properties being culturally relevant at the same time, so it’s up to Marvel Comics to decide whether this Easter egg deserves a closer look.
Wicked adapts the Broadway musical into a two-part film, following the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, born green, and Glinda, a popular aristocrat, in the Land of Oz. As they navigate contrasting paths, they evolve into Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
