Marvel X-Men the franchise is in the early days of a new era, as ‘From the Ashes’ establishes a permanent status quo for mutant heroes. Now, fans are learning about big plans on the way in 2025including an event story and a mysterious “special project”.
Writing on your blog Man with hatX-Men senior editor Tom Brevoort was asked about future plans for Marvel’s ‘X-Books’. These currently include the flagship X-Men, Mysterious X-Men and Exceptional X-Men titles as well as team books X Force, X Factor, NYX and Sentinelsand solo titles, including Storm, Wolverine, Phoenix and much more. Brevoort confirmed that plans for the main titles are “Pretty solid through the end of the year and our first little crossover moment,” but it also offers some hints about what comes next:
And from there, as we enter 2025, we’re talking about a storyline for March, a special project for May, potentially a major one-shot for June, and a big X-line event around October. But all of this is subject to change as local conditions change in real time.
The “first little crossover moment” is probably next X-Men/Mysterious X-Men ‘Raid on Greymalkin’ crossover, which will see Cyclops and Rogue’s teams face off over a planned attack on the X-Men’s former school, which is now being used to imprison mutants.
X-Men needs to establish a new sense of identity soon, especially having fractured the relationships fans know and love.
Our Take on the Next X-Men Event and Other Mutant Plans
X-Men needs a renewed purpose to keep fans interested in the larger franchise
A planned ‘event’ story is big news for fans. Although the Krakoan Era 2019-2024 has had crossover events like X of Swordsthey were very anchored in the new direction of the franchise at that time, which was a significant departure from the heroes as most fans know them. Before that, the last major X-Men event was in 2016 Inhumans vs X-Menwho is not remembered very fondly by fans. While comic book fans sometimes complain about “event fatigue” with big stories taking over all of Marvel’s comics for several months, an X-book crossover will probably be received more warmly, especially since former friends and allies are so fractured after the Krakoan Era.
In addition to event X, teases of an important project and “special one-shot” are interesting, even though they could mean just about anything. The ‘From the Ashes’ era sees many X-Men go it alone in an unusual way for the franchise, with heroes like Dazzler, Psylocke and Magik receiving rare solo series. One of the big things missing from this new era is a sense of purpose – the X-Men have lost their mutant nation and abandoned Xavier’s dream, having lost faith in their former mentor. While ‘From the Ashes’ is establishing a new status quo, X-Men needs to establish a renewed sense of identity soon.
More news will emerge as Marvel continues its biggest X-Men story, but while dates may be subject to change, it’s clear that Marvel’s mutant franchise is taking a clear approach to what comes next.
