Marvel's new Ultimate Universe has slowly introduced iconic mutants into its mythos, like the many featured in the acclaimed Peach Momoko film. Last X-Men title. Fortunately, two of the most beloved X-Men heroes will finally receive the Ultimate update, with Kitty Pryde and Gambit debuting next Supreme Wolverine #3 with some Chilling new redesigns that transform them into fierce mutant liberators.
Remy and Kitty are two of Marvel's most famous mutant heroesand his presence was greatly missed in the Supreme Universe. With how exciting and diverse the Ultimate interpretations of the classic characters have been, fans are already looking forward to meeting these new versions of Gambit and Kitty.
Supreme Wolverine #3, by writer Christopher Condon and artist Alessandro Cappuccio, continues the story of the Ultimate Winter Solider, who appears to be the Ultimate Universe version of Wolverine, as the Russian agent battles two members of the mutant Opposition: Kitty Pryde and Gambit. Capuccio's cover for the issue depicts the two X-Men heroes with terrible scars all over their facesindicating how dangerous their lives are in this new universe.
Gambit and Kitty Pryde are true revolutionary mutants
But who exactly is the opposition?
Ultimate Wolverine, whom his creators call Winter Solider, is apparently similar to Earth-616's Logan, complete with his deadly and vicious adamantium claws and skeleton. The Winter Soldier's creators are Magik, Colossus, and Omega Red, the mutant leaders of the Eurasian Republic and members of the Council of Creators, a group of villains dedicated to keeping Earth under their iron rule. The origins of this new Winter Soldier were revealed in Final Universe: One Year Laterwhich detailed how scientists from the Eurasian Republic experimented on their nation's mutants, eventually find Logan and turn him into his own Winter Soldier assassin.
The Eurasian Republic was meant to be the land of mutants on Earth-6160, an interesting choice given how Hi No Kuni's Last X-Men It's also full of mutants. Of course, due to the vile nature of the Republic's leaders, mutants are mistreated, detained, and murdered on a regular basis, which leads to the creation of a rebel group called the Opposition. In Supreme Wolverine #3, Kitty and Remy, who appear to be high-ranking members of the opposition, are seen fighting the violent Winter Soldier, who has been sent on a mission to kill mutants. Both heroes have multiple scars on their faces, which are permanent visual makeovers for the iconic characters that show how dangerous being a member of the Opposition really is.
These X-Men Heroes Might Be Able to Free Wolverine
It is, once again, a weapon controlled by the government
Marvel's request for Wolverine Issue 3 ends by asking: “But do the pair recognize the man behind the mask?” The Eurasian Republic found their “specimen,” which they turned into the Winter Soldier, in the wild…could Logan have been a former member or leader of the Opposition? Logan is once again a weapon controlled by an evil government entity, and he needs to be freed from the clutches of the Eurasian leaders if he ever wants to become a hero in the Ultimate Universe. Hopefully, Kitty and Gambit recognize the brainwashed killer and are able to break through whatever programming has infected his mind…
Members of X-Men permanent physical changes are rarely made, especially in their recent “immortal” Krakoan Era, making them the scars that Gambit and Kitty memorable change into their heroic designsand I hope they don't leave the Winter Solider encounter with more scars!
Supreme Wolverine #3 from Marvel Comics debuts on March 26, 2025.
