X-Men has been alone for a long time now. It’s time for a new mutant to usher in the next era.

X-Men has been alone for a long time now. It’s time for a new mutant to usher in the next era.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Storm #2!!

A staple of X-Men it’s the feeling that mutants are left to face the mutant species’ constant series of tragedies alone. I know I’m not alone in feeling like they’re stuck in a never-ending cycle, especially after the fall of Krakoa, but Storm offers a glimmer of hope for me. I think her discovery of a hospital funded and run by other superhero groups could change everything.

In Storm #2 – written by Murewa Ayodele, with art by Lucas Werneck – Ororo begins a desperate search to combat her rapidly developing radiation sickness. The hunt takes her to the Extramundane Hospital. While the existence of this hospital is an exciting revelation in itself, I immediately saw it as a possible omen for what was to come.

Storm donates a ruby to Dr. Daye of Extramundane Hospital

His discovery comes shortly after R-LDS, or Regeneration-Linked Degenerative Disease, begins to appear among the X-Men, causing a loss of control over the X-Gene abilities; the disease is probably the next big mutant tragedy, and I think Storm is on the verge of making sure they don’t face it alone.

Storm’s powerful connections could offer the help the X-Men desperately need

Avengers #17 - Sam Wilson Captain America tells Storm why the team needs her to join

Storm’s status as an Avenger is a key component to my theory that she needs to change the X-Men’s status quo. Sam Wilson specifically approached her to be a voice for mutants because Captain America felt the weight of the Avengers’ failure to help the mutants against Orchis. This wasn’t the only time the Avengers and other superhero teams did too little, too late, and I, for one, will never forget the mutants who faced the Genoshan Massacre virtually alone. Ororo accepting a position with the Avengers could (and should) make a difference, and the mutants couldn’t ask for a better connection.

Storm is positioned to pressure the Avengers and other heroes into helping the X-Men, and I can’t think of a more perfect vessel than the Hospital for the Extramundane. All the hands that could help the mutants take on the R-LDS are already in play, as by my count the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Heroes for Hire, and Defenders are already involved. Pooling their resources and minds to provide true and meaningful assistance to the X-Men wouldn’t even be a stretch; As such, I would think it a complete waste not to combine Storm’s connections with the vast knowledge and resources involved at the hospital.

The new era of the X-Men is creating a devastating new threat for mutants

“R-LDS” is just getting startedX-Men Storm arrives at Night and Daye Hospital

As if the fall of Krakoa and subsequent dispersal of mutants weren’t enough, R-LDS promises to cause more unrest among an already suffering population. It’s a repetitive cycle that I’ve been observing for decades, perpetuated by the frequent isolation of the X-Men from other superhero groups. There were few occasions when someone stepped in to help mutants when they needed help. The creation of Krakoa was no surprise to me, seen in this light. The X-Men and mutants have been left to fend for themselves in times of need – leaving readers asking why they shouldn’t isolate their paradise as well.

Not only is Storm an Avenger, but she just bought the X-Men’s ticket to this incredible superhero hospital.

Still, I think isolation is at the heart of the franchise’s biggest problems. The feeling of hopelessness is widespread and I am confident that the way to combat this is through a new type of seizure. It’s time for the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and everyone else to step up, with Storm at the helm. Not only is Storm an Avenger, but she just bought the X-Men’s ticket to this incredible superhero hospital. For me, it’s the perfect setup for finally show the X-Men that they are not alone and dispel the heavy feeling of desolation that hangs over them.

I believe the storm can bring the change the X-Men franchise urgently needs

Storm #3 – Available December 11, 2024 from Marvel Comics

The fall of Krakoa was devastating, not just for the mutants themselves, but for me and many other X-Men fans out there. While the era had its drawbacks and complications, it offered a respite from the feeling that mutants could never have positive experiences in the world. Now we’re mired in that feeling again, but somehow coming back to it is worse this time. Krakoa offered an alternative, and its loss means something else needs to change. The best answer I see is for the superhero community to fully embrace the X-Men and clarify that they have support.

I firmly believe that Storm should unite the mutants with the other Marvel heroes and prevent the X-Men from suffering alone from the impending devastation of R-LDS.

Something bigger than Krakoa failed for the X-Men, making it difficult to remain excited about a franchise I’ve loved for decades. The characters feel the same weight as I do, even veteran players struggle to find a reason to continue, and it’s long past time for something to break the cycle. Fortunately, the Hospital of the Otherworldly is the perfect platform and Ororo Munroe is one step closer to taking center stage. I firmly believe that Storm must unite mutants with other Marvel heroes and stop the X-Men of suffering only from the imminent devastation of R-LDS.

Storm #2 is now available from Marvel Comics.
