For decades, Jean Gray was X-Mengreatest power, but now she has literally ascended to godhood. As part of Marvel’s new era, From the Ashes, Jean explores space while realizing her incredible power. Now Phoenix’s space travel has brought her to the attention of the only villain who will never allow a god to live – Gorr, the God Butcher.
In preview Phoenix #4 Created by the creative team of Stephanie Phillips, Alessandra Miracolo, David Curiel and Cory Petit, Jean Grey’s actions caught the attention of the Galactic Council. In particular, Gladiator of the Shi’ar Empire, who expresses great concern that Jin will eventually lose control of his enormous power.
While Gladiator doesn’t have much support from the rest of the Council, there is no doubt that the outcome of this meeting will lead Gorr to Jean Grey’s trail. Gorr is a dedicated villain who attacks and kills gods after his own deity failed to save his family. The fact that Jean is in Gorr’s line of fire confirms that she has transcended mere superhuman and ascended to godhood.

Jean Gray achieves god-level status with her Cosmic Phoenix powers
At the end of the X-Men’s Krakoan Era, Jean was instrumental in reviving the Phoenix by harnessing the power of every mutant across time and space. She is more closely connected to the cosmic force than ever, while still in complete control of its reality-altering power. Although Jean often struggled with the influence of the Phoenix and the temptation of darkness, she finally moved beyond this relationship with the cosmic firebird.
In her short time as the reborn Phoenix, Jean Gray had already stopped the explosion of the dying sun by absorbing excess energy to extend the sun’s lifespan. She single-handedly fought Thanos’ Black Order and won, and stabilized the black hole to save the prisoners of the intergalactic prison. In short, Jean began to solve godly problems with godly solutions, increasing her power level while gaining Gorr’s attention.
Jean Gray Faces the Problems of a God, Not a Mutant Hero
Jean Gray’s enemies are on a different level than fans are used to
After stabilizing the black hole, Jean made the difficult choice of allowing the dark god Perrick to escape. Unfortunately, Perricus has entered into an alliance with Adani, a preacher who blames Phoenix for her father’s death. Given the power to fight the god, Adani teams up with Perrikus and the Black Order to pursue the Phoenix. These are the types of enemies that are usually reserved for someone like Thor (who has faced both Perricus and Gorr in the past), but with Jean’s new level of power, dark gods have become a common sight.
Gorr, the Butcher of Gods, wants to kill the Phoenix, Adani pursues her to kill the god who caused her father’s death, and her incredible feats of saving a dying sun, stabilizing a black hole, and defeating Thanos’ Black Order single-handedly. Jean Gray has officially established the title of goddess in the Marvel universe. Unfortunately, in the Marvel Universe this does X-Men‘s Phoenix the target for a whole new type of villain.
Phoenix #4 will be released on October 9th from Marvel Comics.
