Warning: This post contains spoilers for Outlander Season 7, Episode 14
Outlander Season 7 Episode 14, 'Ye Dinna Get Used To It,' officially set nearly every character on their final paths for the rest of the season. With just two episodes left, Season 7 has a lot of tension to resolve before the season finale, but the intertwining threads of the stories are converging. While Outlander Season 7, Episode 13 was a bit slower than some of the season's action installments, “Ye Dinna Get Used To It” brought back the intense drama and fast pace, establishing a strong conclusion.
Jamie is back in his element as an inspiring general. It's gratifying to see him lead a company we know will win. He and Claire are at their best as a striking wartime couple, as the general and the doctor who lead the Revolution to victory. The conflict that plagued them after Claire's brief connection with Lord John has been resolved and everything seems fine for the central couple. While this tendency to squash conflict as soon as it appears is a bit off-putting, it's forgivable considering the ground the season has to cover.
William's storyline in Outlander Season 7 is shaping up to be its most compelling arc
Outlander is spending more time developing its most interesting character
The reunion between Claire, Jamie and Lord John is disheartening because everyone seems to have successfully overcome their problems. While John isn't a free man, he has bigger problems to resolve before the episode ends. Most of episode 14 gives a look at the Revolutionary War, and with each scene I get more excited to see the payoff for Jamie and Ian's hard work with the army. In Bree's time, the conflict between her and Rob Cameron is heating up and it's hinted that Bree and her children may not be secure in their present for much longer.
We only get a little bit of Ian and Rachel in 'Ye Dinna Get Used To It'. However, it's enough to keep us engaged with their romance, even if the tension of the will-they-won't-they dynamic has worn off. With the two main couples – Ian and Rachel and Claire and Jamie – are solidly on the right track, Outlander it rests on the concern that Jamie and Ian could die in battle at any moment. Fortunately, if there are casualties, they probably won't occur until later in the season to make an emotional impact. For now, this isn't too worrying and we can turn our attention fully to William.
Charles Vandervaart does an excellent job balancing William's tortured side with the larger part of him that wants to be a good man.
William is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters this season. Charles Vandervaart does an excellent job balancing William's tortured side with the larger part of him that wants to be a good man. No matter how much he tries to distance himself from the man he now knows is his father, he ends up approaching the beautiful and heroic figure of Jamie, who has been winning our hearts since the beginning. Although he still has a long way to go and there are obstacles beyond his control that will determine William's ultimate trajectory.
Silvia Presente's Jane makes a surprising but appreciated appearance, and her relationship with William is something to look forward to in the coming episodes. They have decent chemistry and Presente's bolder character is a good foil for William, who needs to relax a bit. Since both couples are well taken care of, Outlander needs a new romance, and Thanks to William's increased screen time, it seems natural for him to surpass Rachel and find a relationship outside of your complicated family to support you.
Outlander needs to wrap up a lot of stories before the season ends
The pace of the final episodes will only pick up after “Ye Dinna Get Used To It”
One of the consistently frustrating parts Outlander and that the series never allows more than two main characters to be in the same place for more than a scene or two. As soon as there is a reunion, the characters are on the run from each other on another mission that will likely separate them once again. However, this is helping to push the season forward at a rapid pace and will hopefully ensure that Season 8 takes its sweet time when the show finally comes to an end.
With just a few episodes left in the season Outlander has been teasing us with different pieces of the puzzle and creating high expectations for the next two episodes. One of the moments I'm most looking forward to will be the confrontation between Jamie and William. Both father and son must face what they mean to each other and what their opposing loyalties mean for their future. I want to see William be the good man he clearly is on the inside, but it's still unclear how he will be convinced to fight for the Revolution.
