FX’s thrilling action series The Old Man returned for an explosive second season in late 2024, but will it get a season 3 renewal? Based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry, the series concerns retired CIA agent Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges), who comes out of hiding after foiling an attempt on his life. The series has only grown and expanded throughout its first season, with the drama between Dan and his estranged daughter (Alia Shawkat), as well as his complicated relationship with FBI agent Harold Harper (played by John Lithgow).
Season two finds Dan and Harold traveling to Afghanistan to rescue Emily from Hamzad, but it’s never that simple in the ex-CIA agent’s world. With Emily discovering her true origin, Dan’s mission isn’t as easy as he thought. Although the first season received decent scores from critics, the second season of The Old Man was not received as favorably and even scored a paltry 50% in its first few episodes (via Rotten tomatoes). While this may not be enough to doom the series, especially if things improve, the critical reception could make it The Old Man Tough season 3.

Jeff Bridges offers an uncertain update
Showing he’s just as in the dark as viewers, the latest news comes as an uncertain update on The Old Man Season 3 by Jeff Bridges. When asked if the show would be renewed, Bridges simply said “Well we don’t know,“ before mentioning that this word can come up at any time. While the actor may simply be maintaining a shy demeanor, it’s telling that even the show’s star doesn’t know where The Old Man currently is.

Old Man Season 3 Story Details
Emily turns the tables in season 3
The greatest strength of The Old Man is that she’s never afraid of change, and the season 2 finale took the series in a whole new direction. Parwana (aka Emily aka Angela) has flipped the script on her real father and is now the leader of her group after his death. This possibly led Parwana to abandon all her morals in favor of the same cruelty that drove Hamzad. However, just like the man who raised her (Dan), she could simply be playing a new role to achieve her goals.
This created a tense ending to season 2, in which Parwana approaches Dan and volunteers him for a new mission that he has no choice but to accept. With Harold captured and Parwana firmly in control of Afghanistan, Dan is tasked with bringing back his darker personality. and transforming into the cold-blooded killer that truly lies within him. How will this happen in The Old Man the season remains to be seen, but it will certainly be an exciting new chapter in FX’s action-packed hit.
