Will the Chainsaw Man movie be different from the anime? Don’t be surprised if so.

THE chainsaw man The anime was one of the most anticipated of all time before its release, no doubt due in large part to the enormous amount of fanfare generated by Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original manga. And although the series received a generally favorable reception upon airing, many viewers were not entirely satisfied with studio MAPPA’s adaptation. Now, almost two years later chainsaw manAt the end of the first season, a new film covering the manga’s Reze Arc is in production, and there’s good reason to take over. may come with a new visual style.

Unfortunately, since the release of Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Arco RezeIn the initial teaser trailer, very little was shared about the film. The trailer itself is extremely stylized, although it didn’t go into enough detail to confirm whether the series’ art direction would be changed. Due to some changes behind the scenes at MAPPAhowever, the next film will likely have a new director at the helm, with an entirely new vision for chainsaw man.

Chainsaw Man’s Pray Arc Movie Will Likely Have a New Director

The series’ previous director has since left the studio

First season of chainsaw man was directed by Ryu Nakayama, a self-proclaimed fan of the series who aimed to bring the manga’s cinematic feel to life. Although he ultimately achieved his goal with the anime, delivering an artistically grounded adaptation that emulated a live-action series, many fans disagreed with Nakayama’s vision for chainsaw man. And in early 2024, the director announced on X that he would open his own animation studio separate from MAPPA, called Andraft.

Since MAPPA still holds the rights to chainsaw man, the likelihood of Nakayama returning for the Reze Arc film is extremely low. The director’s reasons for leaving MAPPA and starting his own studio were never revealed, although there is speculation that online reaction to the anime’s first season led to his departure. Regardless, a new director will certainly bring a fresh approach to the series, starting with one of the manga’s most popular arcs.

Chainsaw Man’s anime art style is divisive among fans

Some fans disagree with the series’ dark tone

The biggest criticism chainsaw manThe first season came with its desaturated color palette and relatively dark tones. Although the series is undoubtedly darker, many fans believe that a brighter adaptation would have suited the source material betterpartly because of the colorful pages and covers of Fujimoto’s own volumes. Often, the mature themes portrayed in manga panels are juxtaposed by bright, contrasting colors in distinct and unique ways. The colorized version of the manga follows a similar style, although it was made by VIZ and not the series’ author.

Although it cannot be certain that chainsaw manReze Arc’s next film will adopt the manga’s brighter color palette, so there will certainly be a noticeable change as long as a different director comes on board. Tatsuki Fujimoto is a self-proclaimed film enthusiast, however, and it shows in his work. Fans shouldn’t be surprised if chainsaw man maintains its cinematic brand, regardless of its director.
