How Niles met Matilda
Why Niles fell in love with Matilda
Niles had been dating Matilda for two years when they started filming the show. Niles revealed that he met Matilda on social media. She sent him a DM out of the blue. Niles didn’t know how Matilda found her identity. She sent him a text saying “Hi” and asking Niles how he was doing. Niles suspected that Matilda was a catfish or perhaps a scammer, as he admitted that he thought she was “too good to be true” as he thought she was very beautiful.
“When she smiles, that’s it, that’s it, that’s it… It makes you feel a certain way.”
Niles confessed that the butterflies in his stomach weren’t just because of Matilda’s beauty. Given what he’s been through in life, he never thought love was possible for him. However, Niles realized that he truly loved Matilda. They talked every day whenever they could for two years. They didn’t even need to talk to have fun and they could do it just by sitting and looking at each other. Matilda also accepted him for who he was when Niles told Matilda that he suffered from autism spectrum disorder.
Niles proposed Matilda on video call
Niles got into trouble
Matilda made Niles feel that he, too, was someone worthy of having a partner, a family, getting married, and finding happiness. It was everything Niles ever wanted. Niles was eager to bring Matilda to the US. Although she didn’t want it to happen right away, Matilda wanted to marry him on her first trip to Ghana. Niles was so in love with Matilda that he couldn’t wait and proposed over the phone. He was very happy when Matilda said yes. However, things started moving quickly from there.
To her surprise, Matilda was “full steam ahead” and was planning everything for a wedding during her trip to Ghana. Matilda’s excitement began to stress Niles. He wondered why Matilda was rushing the marriage process so soon. He wondered why Matilda didn’t want to wait until they were together. However, he assumed it was a “culture thing”And that she was Matilda was being pressured by“outside.” Niles still wanted to get to know Matilda better so they could move on from there.
Why Niles wanted to postpone the wedding
Niles had his reasons for postponing the wedding to a later date
Niles was afraid to tell Matilda the truth. He believed Matilda was the love of his life, but he feared she would abandon him if he postponed the wedding. Niles didn’t want to lose the only woman he ever loved. Niles also knew he would spend at least $3,000 during the trip. Between the hotel reservations, the flight, and whether the wedding actually happened, there were a lot of other expenses to cover. Niles worked as a food delivery agent after his regular job so he could save up for the trip.
Niles spoke about the “bride price” he had to pay Matilda’s family so that they would allow him to marry their daughter. Niles had no idea how much he would be paying. In addition to the wedding being an expense he didn’t think he could afford at the moment, he believed they needed to spend some time together before they could commit for the rest of their lives. Niles was impressed every time Matilda mentioned the situation. He began to mask and hide his true feelings to please Matilda with his answers.
Niles got engaged to Matilda in Ghana
Niles proposed to Matilda to distract her from the wedding
Niles planned a surprise for Matilda in Ghana. He arranged a visit to the salon for Matilda so she could get her nails done and said he wanted to explore the place himself using GPS. Niles visited Mahmoud’s Jewelry in Accra where he purchased an engagement ring for Matilda. He felt the need to propose to her in person. He thought it would be a good idea to tell Matilda that they needed to postpone the wedding while he proposed. He didn’t know if this would ease the anger, but he felt it was the best idea.
Niles finally told Matilda it was too soon for them to get married
Niles broke Matilda’s heart
Niles presented Matilda with a $234 ring. He was seeing that a “true” happily ever after was possible with her. He wished Matilda would see that he would come back and marry her because his love for her was so much deeper and more timeless than whatever deadline they were imposing. He proposed to her at the memorial of Ghana’s first president. Later that night, Niles and Matilda went to a club called the Zen Garden. Niles braved the noisy environment by wearing noise-cancelling earplugs. He had to concentrate and tell Matilda the truth.
Matilda was very happy because it was not common in Ghana for someone to plan such a romantic proposal. She was eager to go to Kumasi to prepare for the wedding. Niles informed Matilda that they couldn’t necessarily have the wedding on the trip because he wanted to give her the best he possibly could and wanted to get to know her better which wasn’t possible during the trip. Matilda angrily told Niles that this was a shameful situation for her and that people would laugh at her. Niles wanted Matilda to show people her ring as proof of her commitment.
