The 2024 film was adapted from the first act of the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name, which was written by Winnie Holzman with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. A sequel adapting the second act is scheduled to open in theaters in November 2025. The film's star-studded cast includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande-Butera, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.
In addition to the film's critical reception, the Evil box office broke many records. This includes surpassing 1978 Grease to become the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time in North America. After opening with an impressive $112.5 million, the film went on to gross $333.5 million at the domestic box office, which, along with an international gross of $135.5 million, brought its worldwide total to $469 million before its fourth weekend in theaters.

2024 is a year overwhelmingly dominated by sequels, be they belated sequels to classics like 1988 Beetle juice and 1996 Twistedor more contemporary film sequels, including 2021 Godzilla vs Kong2016 Moanaand 2021 Dune. In fact, the second film of the year, which is the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool and Wolverine and a direct sequel to both from 2018 Deadpool 2 and 2017 Logan as well as being part of the overarching MCU and X-Men franchises.

While Evil is the only non-sequence not exempt from being an IP property. In fact, it is part of a long chain of adaptations. In addition to adapting a hit musical, the original Broadway show was itself an adaptation of Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel of the same name. That novel was inspired by the 1939 film The Wizard of Ozwhich in turn was adapted from L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, giving the 2024 film an even deeper IP history than anything else in the Top 10.
