Wicked set up the sequel's biggest twist in the first minute

The triumphant musical film Evil may have given its most important twist in the opening scene, within a story that brings several surprises regarding the origins of all the characters in The Wizard of Oz. The long-awaited adaptation began its journey as a novel by Gregory Maguire Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West; was turned into a hugely successful Broadway musical, a version that is the basis of the film. The musical and film versions of Evil made many changes to the book, which is inherently a different story.

The film's opening scene, before passing through Oz and landing in Munchkinland, shows the location of Elphaba's supposed death. In a dark castle, a puddle covers the floor, leaving only the witch's iconic pointed hat. Here Glinda's narration describes how Dorothy melted Elphaba. However, there are some carved lines visible on the floor, which could indicate a trapdoor. This alludes to the Broadway show's final twist, in which Elphaba actually survives her encounter with Dorothy, apparently using a spell to melt the floor and hiding under the trap door until she can escape.
