Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wicked.
Director Jon M. Chu explains his intention behind Dorothy’s cameo in Evil and how it affects Part 2, set for release on November 21, 2025. Adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway show of the same name, Evil is an epic two-part musical that tells the story of the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), and her friendship with the Good Witch of the East, Glinda (Ariana Grande), with Jeff Goldblum starring as Oz. The opening sequence along with the film’s marketing features Dorothy, despite her not being in the Broadway version.
Chu argues with Screen speech about Dorothy’s inclusion and the role she plays Evil. The director revealed that she “presence is important” why Dorothy”plays a significant role in what will happen” and how the Evil film fits The Wonderful Wizard of Oz history, teasing that the Texas girl has a role to play in the next Perverse Part 2but viewers will have to wait until the second film to find out the details. Furthermore, Chu explained that he didn’t want to “trample“the consecrated image of Dorothy. Check out what he said below:
Now, I’m not going to say too much about what we showed or didn’t show in Movie 2. But in Movie 1, it was important to let Dorothy be how you want her to be. I didn’t want to step on your images of whatever version of Dorothy you wanted her to be.
But presence is important because it plays a significant role in what will happen and how they intersect. That’s how we played with it. But you’ll have to see movie 2 to see how far we’ll go with her.
What does this mean for the wicked
Dorothy may have a bigger role to play in Wicked Part 2
The majority Evil takes place in the past and is told from Glinda’s perspective as she reminisces about her friendship with Elphaba and how things turned out in Oz, which explores the untold story behind Dorothy’s adventure. The great wizard, Oz, turns out to be the film’s antagonist, who conspires to make Elphaba the villain at the end of Evil. In Dorothy’s story, Oz asks her to travel west to defeat the wicked witch before granting her one wish. Dorothy then becomes the person who defeats the Wicked Witch of the West by melting her.
Chu’s comment confirms that his version is linked to The Wizard of Oz story, which means Part 2 could feature Dorothy defeating Elphaba, given that she is integral to Elphaba’s fate in the source material. His comment also suggests that Dorothy’s brief cameo and other interesting stories from figures like the Cowardly Lion and the Flying Monkeys work to prepare viewers for what happens in the current timeline of Wicked 2.
Our opinion on evil
Wicked expands the Wizard of Oz story in all-new ways
Dorothy’s brief participation in Evil it’s not enough for the film to include the actor’s credit, which shows how brief his cameo really is, but it sends a clear message that tells the audience what Evil is trying to do. The 2024 version combines the Broadway version and the iconic 1993 film The Wizard of Oz together to tell a more epic story.
By showing the condition of the animals, the film explains why the lion in the original story has no courage and why the brick road is golden. The flying monkeys are loyal to the Wicked Witch of the West, but not for the reason fans thought they would be. Evil It’s a rich addition THE Wizard of Oz franchise. With a glowing 98% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 9/10 from Screen speechthe film is easily a must-see this holiday season.
