Why Wicked Has No Original Songs for the Film

Unlike many musical film adaptations, Evil does not include any original music. Since its Broadway debut in 2003 Evil was a musical success and remains one of the longest-running shows on Broadway. Loosely adapted from the book by Gregory Maguire Evil novel published in 1995, the music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartzwho has a cameo in the 2024 film. From “Popular” to “Defying Gravity,” the songs have become iconic and a staple of musical theater for more than two decades.

With Evil Being divided into two films, there was an expectation that original music would be added. However, all Evil The film's songs are from the Broadway musical. A section is added to the song "One Short Day" to explain the lore of the magical book, the Grimmerie, and to introduce two stars from the Broadway musical's original cast, but it is not an entirely new song. Fortunately, the decision to not include any original songs was made for a good reason and works well for the adaptation.

Reviews for Evil were overwhelmingly positive, in part because the film was Hailed as a faithful adaptation of the Broadway musical. Much of this fidelity is based on the decision not to present any original music and also not to cut any songs from the first act of the musical. Given the inevitable differences between a show and a film, the pacing of the songs can feel different, which is perhaps most noticeable in the film version of “Defying Gravity.”

The film makes the necessary changes to the rhythm of the songs and what is visually presented to the audience, but it does not change the essence and emotion behind the music. Director Jon M. Chu, Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande-Butera and everyone involved in EvilThe cast and crew wanted to do the original show justice. They weren't going to add new songs just for the sake of it and wanted to take the time to get all the music and story right.

Wicked: For Good includes two original songs

This will be a significant difference from the first film

A meaningful way that Evil: forever will be different from its predecessor is that it is confirmed that it will feature two original songs. While details about the songs are being kept under wraps, they may have to do with the fact that the story's two most important characters, Elphaba and Glinda, are separated for most of the second act. The first film has the advantage of them sharing the screen consistently, facilitating the development of their conflict and showing the progression of their central relationship.

Adding two new songs won't make the second film any less faithful, but it could help improve the adaptation.
