Why was it changed and what are the good means

Wicked: Part Two officially changed its title to Evil: forever. Despite splitting the adaptation of the beloved long-running Broadway musical into two films, the first installment was simply marketed under the title Evil. It is only during the film that the audience sees the full title of Wicked: Part One displayed on the screen. After the first Evil With the film's emotional ending and the considerable critical and commercial success surrounding the project, it was unclear what approach the next film would take with its title.

The second film was still being referred to as Wicked: Part Twountil “Part Two” was abandoned in favor of Evil: forever title. Even in a year launching new avatar, Mission: Impossible, Knives outand films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the second Evil was already the most anticipated sequel of 2025. This the anticipation is now even more intensified by the exciting and meaningful title of Evil: foreverBilled as the first film, it continues to dominate popular culture discourse, along with the global and domestic box office.

Wicked: For Good is a reference to another song by Elphaba and Glinda

'For Good' is key to the second half of the story

“For Good” is an emotional duet that Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) will sing in the second film. It's one of the most memorable songs from the second act and the entire Broadway musical. The song finds Elphaba and Glinda acknowledging how much they have changed each other forever. The lyrics are a testament to the beauty and tragedy of their powerful friendship, made even more bittersweet by this being the last time Elphaba and Glinda see each other on stage.

Elphaba and Glinda's relationship is at the center of Evilthe history and no song embodies the emotional journey of their friendship as effectively as “For Good.” They compare the roads they took with “a comet removed from orbit”, “a stream that meets a stone”, “a ship torn from its mooring”, and “a seed dropped by a heavenly bird.” Both characters realize that they have forever altered the trajectory of their respective lives and mean a lot to each other, and that they will never forget their bond as long as they live.

Why Wicked 2 chose For Good as its subtitle

It's a more meaningful and recognizable title

“For Good” is just one of many iconic songs from the musical’s second act, with others being “No Good Deed” and “As Long As You’re Mine.” While there are other songs the second film could have chosen, the Evil the story of the films is best served by the song title “For Good”. For fans of the Broadway musical, it's a sign that despite not sharing as many scenes together in the next episode, Elphaba and Glinda's relationship is still the emotional center of the story.

The subtitle “For Good” indicates that the second film will also be faithful in theme and execution of music and important narrative beats.

EvilThe hopeful themes of are succinctly summed up by the subtitle “For Good.”as opposed to the anger and more negative, misguided emotions behind a song like “No Good Deed.” Reviews for Evil have widely praised the film for being faithful to the Broadway source material and even elevating the musical in certain aspects. The subtitle “For Good” indicates that the second film will also be faithful in theme and execution of the songs and narrative beats important in adapting the second act of Elphaba and Glinda's stories.

Wicked 2's new title is better than being labeled as part two

The subtitle for “Part Two” is very generic

Elphaba during Defying Gravity in Wicked

Many two-part films failed to give the second film a “Part Two” subtitle, as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two changing its title to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Although Evil wouldn't have to worry about having a title as long-winded as the next one Mission: Impossible film, the new title is still a smart change. Evil: forever is a much more distinctive title than Wicked: Part Twowhich feels generic and makes the 2025 film feel like little more than a sequel to its successful predecessor.

Although Evil and Evil: forever tell an overarching story, both films should also be able to stand on their own merits. This has a better chance of becoming reality when the second film is titled Evil: forever instead of Wicked: Part Twogiving the story an identity beyond just being a continuation. Evil: forever is a simple but also powerful title that will resonate most strongly with those already familiar with the second half of the musical's story, but it may also stand out more than Wicked: Part Two would have.

Wicked: For Good's Title Change Opens Up the Possibility of More Films

The franchise may continue after Wicked: For Good

Although there are no confirmed plans for more films after Evil: foreverthe title change potentially leaves the door open for more stories. Wicked: Part Two It feels like a conclusive title, as it wraps up the second and final part of the source material's story. With Evil being a massive and ongoing critical and commercial success, and the same trajectory almost guaranteed in 2025 for Evil: forever, Universal Pictures will certainly be interested in seeing this IP further expanded and capitalized on.

The challenge is that there is no Evil musical sequence to adapt later Evil: forever. The musical is loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the Westwhich has several sequels and a series of spin-off books. The thing is, these stories depend largely on Elphaba's son, Liir, and her granddaughter, Rain, who don't exist in the musical. The books also revolve around many dark and sometimes disturbing events that don't happen in the musical and require an entirely different narrative tone.

Cinema can find a different, unexplored path to follow based on where Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), and everyone from Oz end up at the story's conclusion. It would be uncharted territory for musical versions of the characters, which would raise some hesitation, but it would also allow creative freedom that could explore compelling ideas and entirely new songs. If such an undertaking occurs, it still has many years to come to fruition. For now, the focus is on Evil: forevera title change that suits the film well ahead of its 2025 release.
