Zordon demoted Jason and made Tommy the leader of the Power Rangers. Powerful Morphine Power Rangers Season 2, one of the strangest moments in the series’ history. Jason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver first appeared in Powerful Morphine season 1, episode 17, “Green With Evil: Part I,” the beginning of a part four episode that introduced the Green Ranger. While Tommy was initially brainwashed into working for Rita Repulsahe eventually broke free of her spell and joined the Power Rangers as the sixth and final member of what became known as the original team.
Tommy’s run as the Green Ranger would continue until Powerful Morphine Season 2, Episodes 12-13, “Green Ranger No More.” Lord Zedd finally accomplished what Rita was unable to do and eradicated the Green Ranger’s powers. The loss of his powers took a toll on Tommy and caused him to leave Angel Grove for a time, but his time away from the Power Rangers wouldn’t last long. Tommy returned a few episodes later in “White Light”, a two-part episode that introduced the White Ranger. Not only did Tommy gain new powers, but he was also promoted to team leader.
Power Rangers was writing Jason out of the story before Austin St.’s departure.
Zordon’s line was added after the episode had already finished filming
The reason why Jason’s demotion in Powerful Morphine the second season feels so out of place that it had nothing to do with the story, but rather the departures of Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, and Thuy Trang from the series. Their departures were confirmed shortly after the filming of “White Light, Part II”, which led the producers to include a phrase from Zordon in which he would make Tommy the new leader of the team. Jason shows no reaction to Tommy replacing him as leader because that was a later addition to the episode.
The last proper appearance of Jason, Trini and Zack in Powerful Morphine Power Rangers took place two episodes after Tommy became the White Ranger. The original Red, Yellow, and Black Ranges would still appear in a few more episodes after this, but only through repurposed footage and stunt doubles. Power Rangers never gave Jason, Zack and Trini a proper send-offwhich is why their departures and the introduction of their replacements were so strange. When Rocky, Aisha and Adam were introduced, Tommy was already the leader for a few episodes.

Interestingly, Rocky became one of the few Red Rangers who did not lead his team. Although the color red continued to be associated with the role of team leader in the coming years, the Powerful Morphine the crew was led by the White Ranger for most of season 2 and all of season 3. Tommy was one of two White Rangers who led a teamthe other being Delphine from Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers. While it made sense for Tommy to be the leader over Rocky, Jason’s demotion was never given an in-universe reason on the show.
The Power Rangers Comics Reconfigured Why Jason Was Replaced By Tommy
Zordon knew Jason was about to leave the comic book team
The Power Rangers comics from BOOM! The studios take place in their own continuity and can only be used retroactively to explain events from the show. However, they do offer great information about Power Rangers canon and provides a lot of in-universe explanations for things that never made sense in the show. This includes Jason’s demotion, which the comics recontextualized perfectly. In this version of Power Rangers chronologically, the Peace Conference that caused Jason, Trini, and Zack to leave the team was a lie. The three Rangers were on a secret mission.
The Red, Yellow and Black Rangers were recruited by the Blue Emissary for a mission in space. Zordon knew that Jason was about to leave, so he named Tommy the team’s new leader. From Zordon’s perspective, Jason’s heart and mind were no longer in Angel Grove. Tommy, on the other hand, had just proven himself worthy of receiving the While Light and was an obvious choice to become the new leader. Jason, Zack and Trini became the Omega Rangers, a team that only exists in the comics and never appeared in the series.
Tommy would remain the leader of the Power Rangers for three more seasons
MMPR Season 3, Zeo and Turbo had Tommy as their leader
Tommy led the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers from their return in Season 2 until the end of the show in season 3. He would remain as team leader in Power Rangers Zeo, during which the Rangers abandoned their original costumes and gained new powers provided by Zeo crystals. Whereas the show would now use the Ohranger color scheme, it was natural to make Tommy the Red Ranger. Rocky went from Red to Blue, which worked considering Billy was no longer a Power Ranger.

Austin St. John returned to Power Rangers for the final half of Zeowith Jason becoming the second Gold Ranger. Zeo cleverly changed the Jason and Tommy dynamic from the original show – Tommy was now the Red Ranger, and Jason was the extra Ranger with a unique costume and cool toys. Tommy’s time as leader of the Power Rangers did not end with Zeo and continued throughout the first half of Power Rangers Turboafter which he and most of the characters were replaced by new Rangers. Tommy’s replacement, TJ, became the new Red Ranger.
Tommy never officially led another team of Rangers after Turbo (but became a mentor)
Tommy wasn’t actually the leader in Dino Thunder
Although Tommy remained an important part of the Power Rangers universe for decades, he never led a proper team after the events of Turbo. Tommy returned to Wild Force‘Forever Red’ and helped Andros put together a team of Red Rangers, but that was more of a one-off mission. Tommy’s status in Dino Thunderthe season that marked Jason David Frank’s return to the series as a cast member and not just a cameo is debatable. For one, he was the most experienced member of the team and even acted as Zordon.
Tommy only made two proper on-screen appearances after Dino Thunderboth in crossover episodes.
On the other hand, Tommy was yet another additional Ranger who joined the team after Conner, Kira, and Ethan had already established themselves as Power Rangers. Despite all the focus given to Dr. Oliver on Dino Thunderit would be unfair to say he was the leader when that was actually Conner’s role on the team. The Dino Thunder Red Ranger may have taken a while to learn what it means to be a leader, but he ended up rising to the occasion and living up to his title.
Tommy only made two proper on-screen appearances after Dino Thunderboth in crossover episodes where the original Green Ranger helped the younger heroes with help from other Legendary Rangers. In “Legendary Battle,” Tommy was one of hundreds of Rangers who showed up to save the day in the end. In “Dimensions in Danger”, the latest version of Jason David Frank Power Rangers episode, Tommy was once again alone, but met up with some old friends from previous seasons.
