Kristen Stewart Living for the Dead was a fun take on the ghost hunting reality show formula and deserved to be renewed for a second season. Paranormal ghost hunting TV shows have always been popular reality shows, a combination of horror and the intimate style of reality television programming. Living for the Dead is another one of those ghost hunter shows, but with a twist, thanks in part to Rob Eric brought in as executive producer, who was also EP on strange eye. The entire cast is made up of strange ghost hunters and their investigative methods are slightly different from other teams.
The series was created by CJ Romero and Kristen Stewart, and Stewart also serves as the show's narrator. Although Stewart is best known for her acting work, she has delved into directing and producing. Living for the Dead premiered on October 18, 2024 and ran for one season. However, the show was removed from Hulu without explanation the following year in October 2024and it's still not entirely clear why a second season never materialized.
Living For The Dead Was A Key Step For LGBTQ+ Representation In Horror
Ghost hunters worked with people as much as ghosts
Horror has always been a safe space for LGBTQ+ themes and charactersIt often went unnoticed by the blind eyes of producers and even the public, who only realized years later. Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge has its homosexual subtext, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was adopted by the LGBTQ+ community, I saw the TV glow is a modern example of queer themes mixed with horror sensibilities, and there are many other examples. Living for the Dead brings this classic union to the world of ghost hunting.
Not only does Living for the Dead Featuring an all-LGBTQ+ cast, the team also deals with their paranormal investigations in a much more personal way than similar shows. The team takes time to get to know the people who are being haunted. In the same way as Cesar Millan Dog whisperer it's more about training the owners, Living for the Dead it's more about investigating the people who are being haunted.
Executive producer Rob Eric says he feels his show is different from others in the same vein (via TVInsider),
“In most of these shows, your ghost hunters are teasing the spirit.
Eric sees his team as people who want to understand the ghosts they encounternot just kick them out. One of the ghost hunters, Alex LeMay, referred to the show's singular dedication to showcasing queer history
“I love that we delve into the story that includes queer history, which I think a lot of shows haven’t done in the past.”
There is a lot about Living for the Dead this is different from contemporary shows, which is why it's a shame that viewers only get one season of the series.
Living For The Dead's cancellation and removal from Hulu is part of a disturbing streaming trend
Many LGBTQ+ shows have been canceled after a season or two
This is very strange Living for the Dead not only was it canceled, but it was also completely removed from Hulu's platform. What's most frustrating is that no one has come forward to explain why the program was removed. However Living for the Dead wasn't the only show to be removed from Hulu in October 2024 (via Yahoo Entertainment), still follows a disheartening trend of LGBTQ+ shows being discontinued after just one or two seasons. First deaththe Queer as folk redo, and Work in progress they are all LGBTQ+ shows that didn't make it past 1 season.
However, there appears to be a disproportionate number of LGBTQ+ programs that are being eliminated.
The streaming landscape is a total mess, with shows and movies being canceled for no reason. However, there appears to be a disproportionate number of LGBTQ+ programs that are being eliminated. It's unclear whether it's because there's a lack of trust in the creators or the audience, or just because there's a general disrespect for Hollywood's diverse casts. If this way of thinking doesn't change, however, shows like Kristen Stewart's Living for the Dead will continue to be thrown away before they even take off.
Living for the Dead (2023) follows five queer ghost hunters as they travel across America, helping the living by meeting the needs of the deceased. As they explore notorious haunted locations, they uncover untold stories, aiming to bring understanding and acceptance to the misunderstood, both the living and the departed.
