Warning: spoilers ahead for Silo Season 2, Episode 6, “Barricades.”Silo Season 2, Episode 6, 'Barricades,' surprisingly, Mayor Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) appoints Avi Nash's Lukas Kyle as his shadow, and his motivations for doing so are very interesting. Both men were important members of the Silo cast since the show began in 2023, but their stories have only recently begun to interact. At the end of Silo In Season 2, Episode 6, it became clear that their uneasy alliance isn't going to dissolve anytime soon. If this happens, the consequences for Lukas and Bernard could be catastrophic.
After a brief period of just one day, Mayor Holland freed Lukas from the mines in Silo and put it to work. Lukas was tasked with recovering information from a broken hard drive, which he managed to accomplish. However, carrying out this complex task was just the beginning of Lukas' collaboration with the mayor of Silo 18. In the future, their dynamic will be very different from how it has been until now.
Mayor Bernard Holland shows he doesn't trust anyone after choosing Lukas Kyle as his shadow
The mayor of Silo 18 ran out of options
Shadows in Silo they intend to be next in line to replace the person teaching them. For some time now, Robert Sims of Common has been the heir apparent to Mayor Holland's throne, but Robbins' character takes Lukas under his wing instead, he keeps Sims at arm's length as the judge of Silo 18. Since Sim's career change, it's been unclear who would become Bernard's shadow, but “Barricades” solves this particular mystery out of nowhere. Now, Lukas will apparently take over as mayor one day, or at least hold a senior position in the upper levels of Silo 18.
Bernard's choice of shadow says a lot about the position Robbins' character finds himself in. In short, he has no one else to turn to because he doesn't trust anyone he used to treat as a confidant. He is also short of allies after killing Tanya Moodie's Judge Meadows.. Instead, Mayor Holland chose a convicted criminal as his partner, whose only real motivation for helping Bernard is to stay out of the mines.
Why Bernard needs Lukas Kyle's help in Silo
Lukas' skill set and personality make for a powerful combination
Lukas Kyle has a very technical mindso he is one of the few people in Silo 18 who had the chance to recover Bernard's lost data and then decode Salvador Quinn's cryptic letter from the hard drive. Additionally, Lukas has a natural curiosity that was rewarded by Judge Meadows when she told him about the stars, and that level of innate intelligence is hard to find. It's a combination of characteristics that don't come along very often and Bernard jumped at the opportunity to work with him.
The mayor is also fully aware of Lukas' understandable desire not to return to the mines and work himself to death.
There's also the issue of Bernard not knowing what the coded letter could reveal, and he doesn't want the potentially damaging information to fall into the hands of the people he once trusted with all his heart. The mayor is also fully aware of Lukas' understandable desire not to return to the mines and work himself to death. As such, Bernard is possibly abusing the power and authority he has over Lukas to get him to cooperate. Either way, Lukas becoming Bernard's shadow is a huge step in the partnership.
How Bernard's Choice for Shadow Could Backfire
Lukas Kyle's loyalty is far from guaranteed
Bernard's behavior when he realizes that he needs to face Lukas, as his shadow proves that he is only doing this out of pure necessity. Only after Bernard points out does Lukas need to see it”the legacy“to fully decode Salvador Quinn's letter that the Mayor stands up and begins the procedure of taking Lukas as his shadow. Taking this course of action may seem like Bernard's only real option at this time. As a staunch follower of the Pact, he is not willing to let Lukas see the Legacy without first taking an oathbut change can be short-sighted.
After the way he was treated, there is no guarantee that Lukas will remain loyal to Bernardand Nash's character could use his new position against the mayor in the future of the series. If that wasn't already a big enough risk, Judge Sims is increasingly frustrated about being kicked out of Mayor Bernard's immediate circle, and he expresses his anger at Lukas' newfound freedom in “Barricades.” So if Sims wasn't happy with Lukas' temporary pardon from the mines, he will be further removed from Bernard as Silo continues, and the two can be completely at odds.
