Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford’s (Eric Winter) will-they-won’t-they relationship all the time The newbie we had a great run and now we will overcome it collectively. Over six seasons of The newbieMembers of the Los Angeles Police Department have navigated the dangerous elements of their jobs as well as the often more complicated nuances of their personal lives. Although the show stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a 45-year-old recruit to the department at the start of the series, The newbie features a cast that has its share of stories.
Lucy Chen is an ambitious newcomer who starts at the same time as Nolan and has trouble proving she’s up to the task at first. His unimpressed training officer was none other than Tim Bradford. Clearly, something about her intrigued Bradford because Chenford became popular soon afterwith Lucy and Tim dancing around their feelings for several seasons. Chen has always been my favorite character, she’s tough and speaks her mind and I always thought she and Bradford were a good fit. And they were, emphasis on “were”.
Chenford’s Relationship on Rookie Was Great…Though It Worked
The original Chenford arc from seasons 1 to 6 was excellent
Chen and Bradford spent nearly five seasons growing closer, but never sealed the deal on their relationship. That finally changed in Season 5 when Chenford became real. True, it would have been difficult for anyone to overcome the pesky chain-of-command problems, so I can’t blame him too much for waiting so long to get the courage to ask Lucy out.. However, even after they started dating, the complexities of their professional relationship affected their personal lives, particularly when Lucy was trying to become a detective and thought Tim was holding her back.
Chenford was strong, though, not like those nasty relationships The newbie there’s plenty, and Lucy and Bradford have managed to overcome the difficult parts of their relationship. It wasn’t a love that came out of nowhere and that the writers just inserted to spice up the series. Lucy and Bradford’s relationship had been seasons in the making, and it really felt like they were always meant to be together. I didn’t know if The newbie it would last nine seasons or more, as some expected, but I assumed Chenford would be the last.
Breaking up with Chenford in Season 6 was painful, but good storytelling
It made sense that Lucy and Bradford wouldn’t survive Season 6
Then everything exploded with The newbie and Chenford. In season 6, Ray Watkins (David Dastmalchian), a soldier from Bradford’s past, resurfaces in Los Angeles. A dangerous individual long before appearing in The newbieWatkins returns to the city to wreak havoc and continue his criminal activities. Bradford takes this as a personal affront and goes rogue to track down his former comrade in arms. He effectively alienated his colleagues in the department and Lucywho was left in the dark while Bradford began his dangerous mission.
He tells many lies throughout the entire saga and comes to the conclusion that if he can do it so easily, he can lie to Lucy again, and she deserves better.
Specifically, in Season 6 Episode 6, “Secrets and Lies,” Bradford ends up reaching breaking point after resolving his situation with his former comrade in arms, but at the expense of his dignity and morals. After an Internal Affairs investigation opens into him, Bradford decides to break up with Lucy, guilty of the way he handled the entire situation. He tells many lies throughout the entire saga and comes to the conclusion that if he can do it so easily, he can lie to Lucy again, and she deserves better.
Honestly, I don’t hate it. It’s a very unexpected development and a huge bummer for those of us who were happy that Lucy and Bradford finally got together. At the same time, the fact that it took so many seasons for the couple to finally date wasn’t exactly an endorsement of their love for each other either. It’s quite realistic that perhaps their romantic, personal and professional feelings were all intertwined and that although they had strong feelings for each other, they didn’t necessarily need to date and be together forever.
Bradford ends up lying about Watkins’ status and convinces Internal Affairs Division commander Percy West (Michael Beach) that Watkins was killed in action in the Middle East. He also lies to protect his former colleague, Mark Greer (Brian White). Bradford basically gets slapped in the face and everything goes fine. Having him break up with Lucy is an important way of showing that his actions had consequences and that his lie did not come without a price.
Lucy and Bradford weren’t supposed to get back together in Season 7 premiere
Chenford cannot be remade
So, with everything that happened in Season 6, should we all be crossing our fingers and blinking our eyes, hoping Chenford returns? The newbie Season 7? No officers. It’s officially over and I really don’t need to see any more of it. As far as I’m concerned, Lucy and Bradford went through a perfectly appropriate and interesting relationship in The newbie. They met, caught feelings, danced with each other, eventually acknowledged those feelings, dated, went through a difficult period and broke up.
Just because their relationship arc doesn’t end with the series finale doesn’t mean it’s a bad arc.
It’s a story you’ve heard a million times on TV and in real life. It’s not my life. All my relationships end perfectly. I’m currently on 13 of them. But it’s a good ending for Chenford. Just because their relationship arc doesn’t end with the series finale doesn’t mean it’s a bad arc. What would be a problem is if The newbie decides to put Lucy and Bradford back to square one. I really don’t need to see these two characters start all over again.
That would be a bummer if The newbie decided to restart the relationship. Even the idea of widening the divide and reuniting Lucy and Bradford immediately is uninteresting. So what would be the point of Bradford’s arc in The newbie Season 6? These two don’t need to date for there to be interesting stories between them. They are co-workers and friends. Let that be enough. It’s for so many people. Not for me. Like I said, I have 13, not 14, relationships. You don’t know them, they comment on a different entertainment medium.
