Why isn't Maria LaGuerta in Dexter: Original Sin's Premiere?

THE Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin features several characters from the original series, but curiously leaves out Maria LaGuerta in its pilot episode. Developed by New blood creator Clyde Phillips, the prequel series chronicles a post-college Dexter as he embraces his “dark passenger” through the guidance and teachings of his adoptive father, Harry. Dexter implements Harry's code to satisfy his violent urges while ensuring he will never be caught.

After Michael C. Hall reprized his iconic role as the charismatic serial killer vigilante in 2021 Dexter: New Bloodhe returns as Dexter's inner voice and narrator in the prequel series. The series takes place in Miami in 1991, when Dexter begins his career at Miami Metro PD. Dexter: Original Sin it will likely cover some predicted deaths that are already established in Dexter lore. Another upcoming Dexter series, Dexter: Resurrectionexpected to be released in summer 2025 with Hall also scheduled to return.

Maria LaGuerta is the only returning Dexter character who was not introduced in the first prequel episode.

She apparently hasn't been hired yet at Miami Metro PD

Maria LaGuerta does not appear in the premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin. She is notably the only original cast member expected to appear in the Dexter prequel series and does not appear in the first episode. Both Vince Masuka and Angel Batista make their first appearances right at the beginning in the pilot episode. Series protagonists Debra Morgan, Harry Morgan and, of course, Dexter Morgan, played by Patrick Gibson, are also introduced in the opening scenes.

The most plausible explanation is that Maria LaGuerta is not yet working at Miami Metro at this point in the series. Considering how much she learned about Dexter and how Deb ended up taking her life in the original series to protect her brother, she'll likely have her own featured introduction in a future episode. There has been speculation about how she will approach Dexter in the prequel series since she was noticeably flirting with him in Dexter season 1.

She can help find a serial killer

Dexter: Original Sin It might not really start to feel like the classic Miami Metro homicide office from the original series until LaGuerta shows up in a future episode. Once the season's villain is potentially introduced in Original sin, LaGuerta may oversee special hunt for a serial killer that Dexter will almost certainly go after himself. Since LaGuerta is a confirmed character in Dexter: Original SinWhile other fan favorites like Sergeant Doakes aren't, it's only a matter of time before she makes her debut.
