Why Glinda always gets Boq's name wrong in Wicked

Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera) always gets Boq's (Ethan Slater) name wrong in Evilwhich is important for their respective character arcs. When Glinda first arrives in EvilFrom Shiz University, Boq is one of the first people she meets. Glinda and Boq are from different parts of Oz, just as Glinda is from the Highlands and Boq is a Munchkin from Munchkinland. They are both enrolled as students at Shiz University and Boq is immediately smitten with Glinda.

Boq spends much of the first Evil film futilely pursuing his romantic interest in Glinda, only to end up with Nessarose (Marissa Bode), while Glinda is fixated on Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey). When Evil ends, Boq's love is still unrequited and Nessarose has begun to realize where Boq's heart truly lies. Evil: foreverThe story will explore the tension this has on Boq and Nessarose's relationship, while Boq still misses a woman who always calls him Bick.

Glinda got Boq's name wrong because she doesn't care to remember it

He's not on her radar

Since Boq is not someone she intends to impress or someone she comes to care about, Glinda doesn't worry about getting his name right. When she arrives at Shiz, she is focused on finding classmates to impress, and a Munchkin is not someone she cares about impressing. For Glinda, Boq is little more than a distraction when they meet and when he invites her to the Ozdust Ballroom. Even though Boq becomes friends with some of Glinda's colleagues, including her beloved Fiyero, Boq is almost never on her social radar.

Because of the genuine and unexpected bond she forms with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda dedicates time and effort to getting to know Elphaba. However, nothing like this occurs between Glinda and Boq, and so there is never any reason for her to meet him, much less know his name. She's not trying to hurt Boq by calling him Bick, but it's still not something she wants to fix since Boq is never at the forefront of her focus.

Glinda not knowing Boq's name makes her wicked story more tragic

It's tragic that Boq spends so much time obsessing over Glinda and believing he's in love with her, while she doesn't even know his name. Glinda repeatedly calling him Bick should make it obvious that they have no romantic future together. Instead of being the wake-up call Boq needs, he can't let go of his feelings and isn't a good partner for Nessarose, someone who loves him and who he doesn't realize is deeply hurt.

Boq is not in love with Glinda as much as he is in love with the idea of her physical beauty and the perfect facade she presents to the public.

The tragedy only deepens Evil: foreverBoq's story, even after Boq graduates from Shiz and has a life with Nessarose, he still longs for Glinda. It's also tragic that he never really met the real Glinda. Boq is not in love with Glinda as much as he is in love with the idea of her physical beauty and the perfect facade she presents to the public. Glinda not knowing Boq's name is at the root of hard truths about Evilcharacters.
