Murder in a small town delivers a devastating twist in episode 6, leaving many wondering why Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) and Karl (Rossif Sutherland) split in Fox’s new procedural series. The couple has had a pretty straightforward romance thus far. Both characters are evolving from experiences, seeking a new chapter in each other. That is until something leads Cassandra to reconsider her romance with the police chief. In Murder in a small town episode 5, Karl is punished by someone from his past at Cassandra’s expense.
In episode 5, Gordon Murphy (Devon Sawa) kidnaps Cassandra to insult Karl for arresting him after a bar fight. Murphy blames Karl for their subsequent breakup, which he claims would never have happened if he hadn’t been arrested and labeled a criminal. Suffering from terminal cancer, Murphy kidnaps Cassandra with nothing left to lose and successfully jeopardizes Karl’s idyllic small-town life. Karl and Cassandra’s separation occurs after Cassandra’s kidnapping. In Murder in a small town episode 5, Murphy tricks Cassandra into a meeting. He initially tries to kidnap Holly, but fails and heads towards the librarian. Cassandra is tied up and kept in a house in an undisclosed location around Gibsons, and she makes heroic efforts to publicize her location via TV. Even so, Cassandra is caught trying to communicate and suffers injuries in a car accident while Murphy tries to escape before the police force catches him. Although Cassandra is a hero during the incident, it unravels her.

While Cassandra is sitting in the back of an ambulance in episode 5, “A Touch of Panic,” Karl asks her what she wants for dinner, and she tells him what’s on the hospital menu. Karl offers to get food from his favorite restaurant, but Cassandra politely declines. His behavior towards Karl is a notable change. It’s not the first time the couple has experienced tension during an episode. However, they always reconcile with a meal or date at the end of the episode. The final blow of the novel comes at the end of Murder in a small town episode 6, “The Method of Madness”. While Karl and his police force investigate the case of a suspected sociopathic killer, Sid (Aaron Douglas) calls Cassandra to the police station to get her statement about what happened to Murphy, which involves her in the episode despite needing space. When the case is closed, Cassandra is on Karl’s porch. She regrets their relationship, and Karl understands that Cassandra is upset, eventually saying they can take a step back. However, Cassandra insists they can’t, implying it’s over between them.

According to a Deadline report, Murder in a small town was greenlit for an eight-episode series, which means There are only a few episodes left to resolve Karl and Cassandra’s romance. Karl doesn’t have any overarching mysteries that come to light, so the conclusion of the series’ first eight episodes will likely focus on Karl and Cassandra’s romance. Cassandra was unwittingly at the center of many of Karl’s investigations as an informant, so we hope their paths cross again, allowing for more opportunities for reconciliation. However, more interactions may cause them to pull away even further.

The development of Cassandra’s art center is one of the only unresolved plot points. Cassandra is raising money for an art center in Gibsons, and there could be a conflict with its opening that causes the former couple to get back together. It will be interesting to see how Karl operates without Cassandra, with whom he has crossed paths in every investigation. There is a small chance that Cassandra will come back from the breakup in episode 7. However, tensions have been rising between the two, so the couple will likely enter TV romance territory.

When he apologizes to her at the end of Murder in a small town episode 6, Karl inadvertently tells Cassandra he loves her. He explains that when he began his career as a police officer, his biggest fear was not for his own life, but for the possibility of putting someone he loved in danger. Karl says that it never happened until it happened, implying that it happened to Cassandra and that there is love there. A look of understanding briefly appears on Cassandra’s face, understanding the comparison, but she seems more frustrated than moved that he told her he loves her in that moment.
Still, Cassandra’s devastation proves that she could feel the same way. The couple’s romance is the highlight of the mystery series. Karl loves Cassandrabut she comments that she doesn’t see herself as the kind of person who dates cops in the series premiere, and the topic comes up again in episode 6. Cassandra adores Karl because he’s a great father and an artist. Still, she’s hesitant about Karl’s background in law enforcement. His traumatic incident only exacerbated his concerns. Whatever direction the romance takes, time is running out for Karl and Cassandra in Murder in a small town.
