With the public ready to say goodbye to Piltover in Arcane Season 2 series co-creator Christian Linke explains why the animated series is ending now. The Netflix animated series is based on League of Legends video game franchise, telling the tragic story of two sisters separated, only to find themselves on opposite sides of a war between two cities. Arcane The cast features Ella Purnell as the chaotic firearms and explosives master Jinx, while Hailee Steinfeld voices her older sister and fighter Vi.
With the first volume of Arcane 2nd season scheduled to premiere on November 9th, Linke spoke with Screen speech to explain why the series is coming to an end with the next batch of episodes. The co-creator explained that concluding the story with season 2 was not a difficult decisionas they had a set direction in mind from the beginning rather than leaving things open-ended for several seasons:
Well, honestly, it was quite natural. We always think of it as a private story. It wasn't just like, "Hey, let's create a bunch of characters, and they'll go where they go." It was always like, “No, there’s a story we want to tell.”
Stating that they explored every detail they hoped to cover, Linke stated that he felt it was always vital to know when to end a storyespecially in the realm of TV, and as such is proud to end the show on its own terms. See the rest of what Linke shared below:
So I think it was just, you know, this is the story we wanted to tell. I think we also believe that knowing when to end is very important, especially in TV shows. I think, for us, it made sense creatively.
What Linke's answer reveals about the future of the world of Arcane
The universe can grow without the champions of Piltover and Zaun
While Linke's statement doesn't offer specific spoilers about what's in store for Jinx, Vi, and the rest of the cast, it does hint at the future of post-Arcane League of Legends animated series. While the second season of Netflix's acclaimed animated show will conclude the stories of Piltover and Zaun, it has already been confirmed that more animated series defined within the world.
However, Linke's comments suggest that the arcs involving Jinx and Vi will reach a definitive conclusion rather than leaving any story thread dangling. As such, it would be safe to assume that most of the cast will not return in future series, especially with Linke having said Screen speech directly that Arcane he would be "just the first"from their TV adaptations of the hit MMORPG franchise:
Absolutely. Arcane is just the first. We're working on several new projects, a bunch of new stories from different regions and characters from our intellectual property, and some of them are actually continuations of Arcane character stories. So there are definitely some character stories we want to continue. So really, Arcane is the true first. This is the first rite we had to survive and figure out, “Can we do this?” And now we can dream bigger, which is really amazing.
Our thoughts on ArcaneNext conclusion
Season 2 will complete the cast's transition to Legends
Of Arcanefrom the beginning, it has always had a definitive end point where it will take on its character. While the series has offered a long and surprising origin story for its cast, many of their destinies have already been set in stone through their video game appearances. As such, characters like Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, and Viktor will become the characters that audiences select as their legends.
However, Arcane it still managed to keep newcomers and existing players invested in the unfolding story without compromising lore or world-building to create a captivating story. So while one story may be ending, viewers will be eager to see what other corners of the League of Legends universe will receive similar treatment.
