Warning: Spoilers for Hellbound season 2
One of the biggest mysteries in the Netflix original K-drama, Hellit is why and how the resurrections happened. After a successful first season Hell season 2 returned with a new cast and even more mysteries. After a three-year wait, the show is back to continue Yeon Sang-ho’s story of angels, demons, and the impact these supernatural beings have on the world.
Just like the first season of the series, Hell Season 2 had a significant time jump that showed how much things changed in the world after Toughie’s demonstration. At the end of Hell season 1, Park Jeong-ja is resurrectedwhich raised doubts about whether other characters who went to Hell would also be brought back to life. Although the second season resolved some of the first season’s mysteries, Hell season 2 ended with several unanswered questions.
How and why people are resurrected in Hellbound season 2
The reason why people were resurrected was not explained in Hellbound season 2
After a person is executed by the monsters in Hellonly a pile of bones and ashes remain when they are sent to Hell. Jeong-ja’s resurrection showed that the Ashes and bones turn to flesh when the executed person returns to lifesimilar to how a Phoenix is reborn in mythology. Although it is clear how a person returns to life, the reason why he was resurrected is not explained.
Resurrections, like manifestations, seem random. There is no proof in Hell season two about why these particular characters were resurrected and others weren’t. It’s possible that these characters were deemed worthy of returning or that their resurrection served some greater purpose. Anyway, since Jins-su became an executionerthis could mean that the path to becoming creatures of Hell begins with demonstration, then resurrection, and finally transformation.
Every character who was resurrected in hell
It is known that only three people were resurrected in hell
In Hell In the first season, Park Jeong-ja, the first publicly known sinner, received the decree declaring that she was in hell and was subjected to manifestation. After spending eight years in Hell, Jeong-ja was mysteriously resurrected at the end of Hell season 1. A few days after being born, Song So-hyun’s baby was visited by an angel who told her the exact day and time she would be in hell. Song-hyun and her husband, Young-jae, sacrificed themselves to save their son. Sadly, Toughie died, but she was resurrected immediately afterwards.

When Jeong Jin-su was still a child, he received a prophecy that told him he would die 20 years later. He could not understand the statement, so he founded a religious organization called New Truth, which preached the doctrine that those who received the decree were sinners to help you deal with your destiny. On the predetermined day, three huge monsters came after him and took him to Hell. The former president of New Truth was resurrected four years after Jeong-ja came back to life.
What happens to people after they return from hell to hell
Each character who returned from hell had a different experience
After her resurrection, New Truth took Jeong-ja so she could explain what Hell was like. They planned to use it to start a new doctrine, as the public no longer believed that only sinners were destined for Hell after witnessing what happened to Toughie. However, Jeong-ja was incoherent and confused. Although Kim Jeong-chil felt that Jeong-ja’s words were absurd, It turned out that she was able to see how someone would die. The Resurrected One could also see when the world would end. So, after Hye-jin rescued her from the New Truth’s clutches, she spent her remaining days with her family.
Although Jin-su clearly had a terrible time in Hell, Jeong-ja remembered that she was a mother even when she was being tortured.
When Jin-su returned from Hell, he lost his sense of identity and had no idea who he was. Every time he looked in the mirror, he would have visions of the monsters that executed him. To understand his new reality, Jin-su went in search of Jeong-ja, as she was the only person he knew who had also been resurrected. But when he found her, it was revealed that the two had different experiences in Hell. Although Jin-su clearly had a terrible time in Hell, Jeong-ja remembered that she was a mother even when she was being tortured.
After confronting Jeong-ja and realizing they weren’t going through the same thing, Jin-su turned into an executioner and returned to Hell. The other person who was resurrected, Toughie, spent his early years being locked away and watched by Sodo. But unlike Jeong-ja and Jin-su, Toughie didn’t seem to have any special abilities and was just a normal kid.. Toughie may have been normal because she wasn’t in Hell as long as Jeong-ja and Jin-su. The reason these characters had different experiences after returning from Hell is not explained at the end of Hell Season 2, but may be delved into later.
