Warning: This article contains spoilers for Transformers OneTransformers One was one of the most interesting film releases of the year. With its extremely positive reviews, Transformers One It looks like it should have been a box office hit, but has struggled to make enough money to become a real hit. Regardless of its monetary status, the film was highly praised, with much of that going to the performances of Transformers Onethe cast and the excellent and moving story told, these being the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron.
Watching Megatron fall and eventually become a Decepticon is a moving case that raises many questions, namely the question of how this fall could have happened so easily. At the beginning of the film, D-16 isn’t exactly happy with the system he’s in, but he’s complianthe just really wants to hang out with his friends. At the end of Transformers One, Megatron is a true villain, letting Orion fall to his supposed death without much thought. There are many factors to Megatron’s downfall, but the inciting incident is his acquisition of a transformation gear.
Alpha Trion gave Megatron a transformation gear as a test
He gave everyone a chance to change the world
In Transformers Onetransformation gears are necessary for any Cybertronian to truly transform, but most people living on Cybertron do not have one, as they are stolen from them at birth by their leader, Sentinel Prime. When Orion Pax, D-16, B-127, and Elita-1 stumble upon the remains of the previous Primes, Alpha Trion, the only one left functional, grants each of the group a transformation gear, telling them that they now have the power to change the worldbut the exact nature of this change depends on them.
As the last true Prime, Alpha Trion’s words have special meaning for D-16. Before he gets a gear, he desperately wants to bring about change in the unjust systems that keep him and others like him tied to their position, both metaphorically and literally. Now that he has one, he has a real opportunity to make that change, but, following Alpha Trion’s words, he decides what form this change will takeand so Megatron chooses to follow the path of death and destruction.
Megatron needed a transformation gear to choose his path
But once he got one, his path was up to him to decide
D-16 is shown many times at the beginning and middle of the Transformers One being content with your position just because you believe you have no chance of surpassing it. He desperately wants more for himself and the rest of Cybertronbut he doesn’t think he can do it without a gear and without the ability to transform. However, when Alpha Trion gives him one, he not only becomes more physically powerful, but he truly believes he can bring about the change he wants to see in the world.
If D-16 had never gotten a transformation gear, it’s possible he would never have attempted any kind of revolt, simply continuing to live as a mining robot for the rest of his life.
While the climax of Transformers One shows that Cybertronians as a whole didn’t necessarily need a gear to bring about change, Megatron needed one to start believing in himself. If D-16 had never gotten a transformation gear, it’s possible he would never have attempted any kind of revolt, simply continuing to live as a mining robot for the rest of his life. But clearly, given the choice to pursue this change, he ultimately decided to follow a dark path, setting Cybertron on the path to ruin and establishing a potential Transformers One sequence.
Is Alpha Trion responsible for D-16 becoming a villain like Megatron?
He was the initial catalyst for the D-16’s transformation
Although Alpha Trion gave D-16 his transformation gear, which led him to become the villain Megatron, Alpha Trion cannot be held responsible for Megatron in the end. His gift to the four characters was simply the starting pointand from then on they have the opportunity to become whatever they want. Their gears cause their own transformations, but it is up to them to decide how they will use these transformations in the long term, just as the ancients did. Transformers Cousins like Megatronus had.
This is very clear in the rest of the cast. Orion Pax, B-127 and Elita-1 choose the heroic path, fighting for justice and freedom for themselves and everyone else on Cybertron. He has given them all the power, but what they eventually become is entirely up to them. In Transformers One, D-16 chose to become Megatron; it was not intended or desired by anyone, including Alpha Trion, it was entirely based on his personal thoughts and desires.
