Whoopi Goldberg addresses the development of Sister Act 3 following the passing of Maggie Smith. Smith, who played the Reverend Mother in the previous film Sister Ato films, passed away on September 27 at the age of 89. Sister Act 3Casting was never confirmed beyond Goldberg’s return to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence, although Smith, Kathy Najimy and other actors from the previous films were expected to return for the long-awaited sequel.
While on Tonight’s show with Jimmy Fallon, Goldberg explained that Sister Act 3 is being recast due to Smith’s passing. Goldberg emphasized that she and the creative team remain committed to making Sister Act 3 a reality, but they need to make adjustments given the loss of Smith. Despite not disclosing specific details about these changes, Goldberg indicates that the adjustments will be substantial. Check out her comments below:
“We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know. Let’s do this. Let’s do this. It’s a change.”
What It Means for Sister Act 3
The script is being reworked
Although plot details for Sister Act 3 were never revealed, Goldberg’s comments suggest that Smith’s Reverend Mother played a significant role in the sequel. With Sister Ato Being one of Maggie Smith’s best films and a significant chapter in her unparalleled career, it’s not surprising that she was a vital part of Sister Act 3. The sequel’s story now needs to find a way to deal with Reverend Mother’s absence and to honor the legacy of the character and the beloved actor who played her.
The start of production or the release date are still far from being announced.
After first being announced in 2018, Sister Act 3 has already suffered significant delays, with producer Tyler Perry’s update in February confirming that the script was still being worked on. The script now needs to be reworked in light of real-world circumstances, meaning the start of production or release date is still a long way from being announced. However, Goldberg, Perry and the entire creative team are still determined to make the sequel work.
Our Take on the Whoopi Goldberg Update
Sister Act 3 must take the time to ensure Maggie Smith is honored
It is disturbing to know that there is a version of Sister Act 3 with Smith that will never happen now, but it’s promising to know that the sequel is being reworked. The third film will be missing one of its best and most important characters, but the Disney film may still find a way to pay homage to her. The team behind Sister Act 3 should take as long as necessary to ensuring the sequence is correct for Smith and his legacy that is intertwined with the Sister Ato franchise.
