Netflix made its first big leap into live sports streaming with Paulo x Tysonthe boxing spectacle that featured professional boxer-turned-YouTube star Jake Paul against iconic, world-famous boxing legend Mike Tyson. The landmark showdown set records when it came to attendance, as the $17.8 million-plus gate brought by Paul vs. Tyson is the highest combat sports gate ever in America outside of Las Vegas. With 70,000 people watching live and the fight broadcast to Netflix’s 280 million subscribers around the world, Paulo x Tyson It was one of, if not the most watched boxing match of all time.
Despite some streaming issues on the Netflix app, the night’s main event generated plenty of buzz due to the popularity of its two competitors. Paul found international fame as a social media content creator, becoming one of YouTube’s highest-paid creators in the late 2010s. He turned that success into a business empire, while also shifting his focus to a career as a professional fighter. “Iron Mike” Tyson requires very little introduction as one of the most celebrated heavyweight boxers of all time and one of the most recognized faces on Earth.
Paul, 27, fought in just his 12th professional fight, while Tyson, 58, arrived with 56 professional fights under his belt. Although no titles were at stake, both men had personal reasons for their participation outside of the spectacle of the event. From the fight’s original announcement to Tyson’s slap on Paul at the weigh-in, the hype was at an all-time high when both men entered the ring.
Jake Paul declared the winner of Netflix’s live boxing match
Paul officially added a win to his record
The official winner of Paul vs. Tyson was the promising Jake Paul, who outlasted the 58-year-old Tyson over eight rounds. Casual and hardcore boxing fans probably enjoyed the undercard, especially the brutal battle between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, but the main event gave fans little reason to celebrate. It’s hard to even call it a back-and-forth fight, as Paul threw many more punches than Tyson, but was never able to land anything truly impactful. Tyson was clearly looking to survive, and he did so using his experience and ability to absorb blows.
How Jake Paul won the fight against Mike Tyson
Paul was awarded a unanimous decision victory

All three judges scored the fight heavily in Paul’s favor, with scores of 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73. Tyson didn’t seem to do much more than stay in the fight, and Paul seemed hesitant to knock him out for fear of exposing himself to a shot from Tyson.

It is important to note that while Paulo x Tyson had special rules and regulations in place, was an officially sanctioned professional match that featured both men’s professional records, largely at Tyson’s request. The fight was scheduled for eight rounds instead of the traditional 12, and each round was scheduled for two minutes instead of the traditional three. Additionally, both fighters used 14-ounce gloves instead of 10-ounce gloves, which were intended to decrease the speed and power of punches to keep both fighters safer.
Analyzing every round of the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson
Round 1
Early in the fight, Tyson came out quickly, proving he was still surprisingly quick for a 58-year-old man. Paul landed a few punches as he tried to get a feel for his opponent, and continued tying him up in an effort to tire out the much older opponent (forcing Tyson to hold on to him and expend energy). Tyson’s familiar style of dodging and defending was not as effective due to his advanced age, as he lacked the quickness to be truly effective. Tyson managed to surprise Paul with a quality jab at the end of the round, but Paul responded with a beautiful right hand.
Round 2
The two men continued to grope each other, and at the start of the round, the crowd began clamoring for Tyson. Tyson’s leg injury was a major factor during training, and it was easy to see that he didn’t have the balance he was known for in his prime. At one point, Tyson’s mouthpiece came out, forcing him to take a moment to put it back in.
Round 3
Tyson once again came out of the corner quickly and forcefully, but to no avail. In fact, this left him exposed to a triple left hook from Paul, which left Tyson visibly wobbly. Paul continued to punish Tyson with punches and hooks, and halfway through the third round Tyson’s age really started to show, along with the blows he was absorbing.
Round 4
The two men danced around each other to start the round, and Paul kept trying to throw left jabs in an effort to position his lethal right hand. Paul landed a lot more punches overall in the fight, and Round 4 was where the difference really widened. Mike’s balance continued to worsen, and weakness in his legs from an injury caused by training (and simply being 58 years old) became noticeable. Overall, there were few punches thrown or landed by either fighter.
Round 5
There was more of the same dance to begin with, but eventually Paul started to do some combinations; he wasn’t able to land anything on Tyson, just glancing blows. Tyson landed a decent kick to Paul’s neck/chin with his left, but Paul responded with a right hand to Mike’s nose. It was clear that Paul’s endless punches were clearly starting to wear Tyson down.
Rounds 6 and 7
The next two rounds saw very little action from either side, as neither of them seemed to want to try for a knockout so as not to expose themselves to something devastating. Paul continued trying to use the jab to break Tyson’s guard, but to no avail. Tyson came out strong from the corner in round 7 and landed a few punches, but that was his last breath for the fight. Paul finally got a three-punch combination to land, but Tyson landed the blows with aplomb.
Round 8
The final round saw more dancing and the crowd grew restless as they realized a disappointing ending was imminent. Paul began to apply some pressure in an attempt to expose a knockout opportunity, but Tyson refused to open up. Both men intensified the action in the final minute and Paul landed another combination, but nothing that caused any real damage to Tyson. The fight ended with groans and a show of respect between the two fighters.
Will there be a rematch between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson?
Seems unlikely and unnecessary
Despite the fight’s unsatisfactory outcome, a rematch seems unlikely, mainly due to Tyson’s advanced age. At 58 years old, it was already impressive that Tyson managed to take part in this fight and appeared in seemingly fantastic shape for his age. The fight was organized by Jake Paul’s boxing promotion company, Most Valuable Promotions, and the money and prestige of hosting Netflix’s first live sporting event is reward enough for this fight, while Tyson received a healthy payday of U.S. $20 million and proved he could at least 16 minutes against a professional fighter.
Jake Paul is set to fight Mike Tyson in a heavyweight boxing match at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The live event is expected to attract significant attention from fans around the world.
