Battles between superheroes – it’s a classic trope from DC to Marvel, and Thor and Sentinel are no exception. Because of the darkness within the Sentry, pure Thor has fought him several times, but the winner varies depending on the context, with Thor on top here and the Sentry as the victor there. The loser, however, sometimes suffers more fatal consequences, including death.
The God of Thunder is one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, but so is Sentry, who is a riotous hero often praised as Marvel’s version of Superman. Thor has been around for most of Marvel, first appearing in Journey into mystery #83 in 1962 by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, while Sentry is a more recent addition to comic book lore, first appearing in The Sentinel #1 in 2000 by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee.
Since the Sentry’s arrival, he and Thor have clashed several times, such as Sentinel vies for Thor’s role as the most powerful Avenger and Thor continues to save the world from the threat of the semi-hero Sentinel or his other darker form: the Void.
Thor and Sentinel: Who emerges as the strongest?
The God of Thunder vs the Dual Hero of Light and Darkness
With the power of a million exploding suns, the Sentry’s power levels were not clearly defined, but often feared. Part of this fear is due to his other personality: the Void.
Thor is the God of Thunder from the mythical land of Asgard. He is the protector of humans and the kingdom of Midgard, as well as a founding member of the Avengers. Beloved by his MCU counterpart, he is even more powerful in the comics, where he was able to amplify his powers to contain even a nuclear explosion. The Sentry, on the other hand, is a ticking time bomb. With the power of a million exploding suns, the Sentry’s power levels were not clearly defined, but often feared. Part of this fear is due to his other personality: the Void.
While Thor is the hero of the comics, Sentry is a more complicated character. His own archenemy exists within his body as a split personality called the Void. As Sentinel, he represents the power of light and the sun, while the Void, his dark half, responds to his heroic deeds with those of darkness and malevolence. There’s a darkness within the Sentry that doesn’t exist in Thor, and outside of his confrontations, the Sentry already has some experience destroying a god.
Thor’s first battle with the Sentry ends in death
The Sentry’s empty form is no match for the God of Thunder
One of the most famous battles between Thor and Sentry took place during the events of Siege by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel. In this culmination of Dark Kingdom storyline, Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers launch a full-on assault on Asgard, and it’s up to the Avengers to save Thor’s homeland. The Sentry, however, decimates Asgard in the form of the Void to such an extent that it takes all of Marvel’s heroes to pull him back to his human self as the Sentry, with the mighty Thor leading the charge.
Thor fights a difficult battle, but in this first encounter, he emerges victorious against the psychologically disturbed hero. Sentry is defeated and begs for death, and Thor complies, turning him into skeletal remains with lightning. This feat solidifies Thor as more than just a god, because Thor didn’t just fight another superhero – he fought the Void, who Norman Osborn was convinced was the unleashed Angel of Death. Even in an alternate timeline, Thor comes out on top, as in And if? Secret Invasion by Kevin Grevioux, Karl Bollers and Pow Rodrix, which sees Thor breaking the Sentry’s neck to end the battle.
Sentry gets an upgrade and a horrible victory against Thor
But Thor returns victorious in yet another rematch
Sentinel, however, is back. Fans have been awaiting Sentry’s highly anticipated MCU debut, with fan art teasing a rematch between Thor and Sentry, but in their comedic rematch, Thor didn’t come out on top like last time. In Strange Avengers #9by Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña, the Sentry is resurrected and infused with the Celestial Death Seed as the Death Horsemen of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. With new powers and no longer restricted by the Void since his death, Sentry suddenly became a god and showed Thor his new abilities.
Sentry in his ultimate form utterly destroyed Thor, leaving him behind in the dust. Fortunately, they got a rematch in Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #2by Jim Zub and Lan Medina, where Sentry is seen in a new merged form. Finally, he discovered how to merge his solar self with his empty self, making him more powerful than ever. However, Thor, with a little help, brings this Void Sentinel to his knees and eradicates the darkness within the Sentinel, for a while at least. With this battle, Thor’s victory score increases again.
Thor defeated the sentry three times
The God of Thunder is stronger than the Sentinel and the Void
Thor may be one of the most powerful Avengers, but he has some competition when it comes to Sentry. It’s still now, Thor still comes out on top with three wins against one victory for Sentryand this victory was due to the power of the death seed, which was completely beyond Thor’s control. If they face each other again in the future, any fan can guess who will emerge as the ultimate winner. But if history is any indication, Thor will come out on top and win Sentinel.
