Not much has been confirmed for The Witcher 4but Geralt's voice actor, Doug Cockle, confirmed that CD Projekt Red's protagonist Wizard the trilogy will return in some form for the latest game. With Ciri being the protagonist, this means her role could be anything from a small cameo like Letho in Wild Huntor a greater mentor role, similar to Vesemir's. Although one of The Witcher 3'S's endings are clearly canon now, with Ciri becoming a witch, it's not so clear which of the other choices are also canon.
One of those important choices, which has caused a great deal of debate ever since The Witcher 3release, this is who Geralt was supposed to end up with at the end of Wild Hunt. Romance options have always been a popular feature in CD Projekt Red titleswith Geralt still managing to collect letters from romantic partners in the first Wizard title. In The Witcher 3the main romance debate is between Yennefer and Triss, and it's a very controversial subject that requires a canon response when players get their hands on The Witcher 4.
CD Projekt Red should keep Geralt with Yennefer
The novel that makes the most sense in the book series
The debate between Yennefer and Triss seems to stem from whether a fan has read the books or just played the games, as Triss has a leading role in CD Projekt Red's trilogy, while Yennefer is a major protagonist in the book series. Still, Yennefer seems like the natural choice for Geralt, even in the game series, given the way they tend to fight and intellectually challenge each other. Their relationship can be harsh and prickly at times, which is an accurate adaptation of the books, but they seem to like it that way.
Blood and WineYennefer's ending also feels more natural, as she mentions that she wants to settle down and essentially retire somewhere once the Wild Hunt is stopped, and Geralt gives him that place in Toussiant with the Corvo Bianco vineyard. With Triss, the place becomes a summer home, as she works in Kovir after the end of The Witcher 3but it becomes a real home with Yennefer. She and Geralt enjoy a sort of post-game retirement, which they need after all the events in the books and games.
Geralt and Yennefer are Ciri's adoptive parents
Ciri is closer to Yennefer than Triss
With The Witcher 4 making Ciri the protagonist, it makes sense that Ciri's canonical choices The Witcher 3 will revolve around what gives CD Projekt Red the best narrative to work with Ciri. Yennefer and Geralt have always been Ciri's adoptive parents, with Yennefer being her mentor after she was separated from Geralt in Blood of Elves. This relationship is well demonstrated in The Witcher 3 too, especially with the way Geralt and Yennefer eavesdrop on Ciri's conversation with Philippa and Margarita Laux-Antille.
Yennefer and Geralt's parental status will give CD Projekt Red better narrative options with Ciri as the new protagonist. If she goes to visit the pair, she will go to Toussaint. The Duchy's almost fairytale-like culture and vibe will make the player feel like they're coming homeespecially if Geralt is still in Corvo Bianco. If she were with Triss, Ciri would have to go to Kovir, a region unknown to the player and a place that would not be home like Corvo Bianco. With Yennefer, everything seems natural for Ciri to be the protagonist.
Triss' relationship with Ciri isn't as important as Yennefer's
She's more like an older sister to the Witcher 4 protagonist
Triss is nobody to Ciri. She is an older sister and met Ciri before Yennefer when she spent her first winter at Kaer Morhen; however, they never became as close as Ciri and Yennefer. With Geralt being an obvious father figure to Ciri, it makes sense for him to be with Ciri's mother figure.which is Yennefer. That doesn't mean Triss doesn't deserve to be The Witcher 4 as is Geralt, as she is a fan favorite and someone close to Ciri, but shouldn't be with the White Wolf.
Players want different things depending on whether they personally had Geralt in a romance with Yennefer or Triss, but CD Projekt Red should choose the option that makes the best narrative sense for the direction it wants to take the series. Yennefer is the best option in this regard, especially considering the long history she and Geralt have thanks to the book series, which includes being Ciri's father. With Ciri taking the lead The wizard 4Geralt and Yennefer together provide the best narrative platform.
