Interestingly, On strange tides it seems like he wants Kay's character to be important. He stands out at certain points on the screen and generally stands out from the rest of the team because of his age, making it strange that he doesn't even have a name; Minor characters from the past who serve as crew members are typically stock figures with some sort of gimmick and are all named. Kay is last seen, again with some focus, alongside Barbossa as a member of his new team.

Kay was a teenager at the time of filming On strange tides and completely unknown in the industry. He later gained more recognition for his significant roles in Once upon a time and Heroes Reborn. No specific reason for him not to return Dead men tell no stories was given; It can be assumed that Kay simply moved on with her career and Pirates of the Caribbean changed his character.
