Kay’s pregnancy is a key plot point Alien: Romulusand although she never names the baby’s father on-screen, his identity has been confirmed off-screen. Each character in Alien: Romulus goes through hell in the film – no one comes out unscathed – but Kay, played by Isabela Merced, undoubtedly goes through more hell than any of her friends. At the beginning of Alien: RomulusKay confides in Rain that she is pregnant. But when Rain asks who the father is, Kay simply says he is “some idiot”And refuses to name him.
This creates an intriguing mystery about the identity of Kay’s baby’s father. Kay’s baby ends up being quite significant to the plot of Alien: Romulus. After Kay escapes the xenomorph hive, she recklessly injects herself with Prometheus’ goo and transforms her fetus into an unholy monstrosity: “The Offspring.” In the third act, the Offspring wreak even more havoc on Rain and her friends than any of the Renaissance station’s xenomorphs. But the question remains: who is the father of the offspring?
Fede Álvarez confirmed that Bjorn is the father of Kay’s baby
Kay’s baby was fathered by her cousin, Bjorn
After the release of Alien: Romulusa lot of different theories and questions about the lingering plots have arisen among the fanbase. How did Weyland-Yutani get the Prometheus goo? How did they 3D print a room full of face huggers? How did “Big Chap” survive being ejected into space? Eagle-eyed onlookers even spotted Ellen Ripley’s escape capsule aboard the Renaissance station, waiting to be discovered in early Aliens. One of the greatest unanswered mysteries of Alien: Romulus it was the identity of Kay’s baby’s father.
In a recent post on Reddit, director Fede Álvarez confirmed the father of Kay’s baby. Redditor u/Noraodel posted a fan theory that Bjorn was the father. u/Noraodel wrote this Shortly before Bjorn’s death, he and Kay shared a moment together in which they touched each other intimately this seemed to suggest a romantic connection between the two. Álvarez himself, the film’s director and co-writer, responded to the post to confirm that the theory was, in fact, true. When no one else noticed, Álvarez added: “Good catch!”
How Alien: Romulus Teases Bjorn and Kay’s Relationship
An intimate moment between Kay and Bjorn is a dead giveaway
Now that the Reddit theory and Álvarez’s confirmation have pointed this out, It seems obvious that Bjorn is the father of Kay’s baby. Their final scene together is a dead giveaway. They don’t just touch each other intimately, as u/Noraodel pointed out; Bjorn is also strangely kind to Kay. Throughout the film’s early scenes, Bjorn is a jerk to everyone – especially Andy, whom he relentlessly bullies simply for being a synth. Just following Kay’s description that the father is a “a** hole,” it should have been clear that Bjorn was the father.
It would have seemed strange for Bjorn to be so nice to Kay after being such a jerk to everyone else. But now it makes sense that he would be nice to Kay; he wants to protect his unborn child and the mother who carries him.
But when he’s talking to Kay, he’s extraordinarily kind and tender. He is very gentle as he helps her to her feet and leads her down the hall, away from danger. He calms her down as she panics over the horrors she has just witnessed. It would have seemed strange for Bjorn to be so nice to Kay after being such a jerk to everyone else. But now it makes sense that he would be nice to Kay; he wants to protect his unborn child and the mother who carries him.
Why Alien: Romulus doesn’t focus much on Bjorn being the father
The filmmakers probably wanted to minimize the incest element
If Bjorn was just another member of the friendship group, Alien: Romulus probably would have made it more explicit that he is the father of Kay’s baby. But since it’s established that he’s Kay’s biological cousin, that means the baby is the product of incest. As Arrested development pointed out, while European cinema will happily embrace an incest story in all its messiness, Hollywood films tend to “naively” sanitize the subject. The filmmakers probably wanted to downplay the incestuous elements and just let eagle-eyed viewers like u/Noraodel notice it upon closer inspection.
There’s likely a message buried there about the dangers of inbreeding. Consanguineous children have a higher risk of birth defects. Alien: Romulus takes these medical risks to the absolute extreme, turning Kay’s inbred son into an ungodly hybrid monster. The horror genre often takes the moral high ground when victimizing its characters. Just as previous horror films preached against premarital sex and drug use, Alien: Romulus preaches against incestuous relationships.
Alien: Romulus is the seventh film in the Alien franchise. The film is directed by Fede Álvarez and will focus on a new group of young characters who encounter the terrifying Xenomorphs. Alien: Romulus is an independent film and takes place in a time not yet explored in the Alien franchise.
