Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina. The Legend of Vox Machina It changed the story of the ragtag adventuring group a bit compared to the original flow of Critical Role, but the third season introduced some major twists with ramifications that haven’t yet been made clear. Some of these changes The Legend of Vox Machina the third season had more emotional impact and some helped the flow of the story, but anyway, The Legend of Vox MachinaThe 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes makes it clear that these were changes for the better. So far, though, nothing has been as far-reaching as the changes to how Vox Machina acquired the Dawn Martyr’s Plaque.
In the original broadcast, Vox Machina acquired the Plate by traveling to the City of Brassthe capital of the Elemental Plane of Fire. There, Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel) tried to win him from his owner, the fire giant Juuraiel, but lost the card game. However, the giant was impressed enough with the team to give them a second chance, and agreed to give them the Tablet in exchange for killing a specific pit fiend within the city.
Later, Vox Machina travels to the city of Dis to permanently kill Hotis, a rakshasa who spent much of the campaign trying to kill Vax. It is in Dis that Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) makes a deal with the demon Ipkesh in exchange for help in destroying Hotis.
In The Legend of Vox Machina In season 3, these plots are combined and simplified by having the Tablet in Despath in the possession of the demon Zerxus Ilerez (Luis Carazo), but its appearance means that new complications are in store for Vox Machina. Although they succeed, thanks to the stubbornness and foresight of Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), Zerxus clearly has a longer game in mind than just the Five Skulls game he loses to her.
Zerxus Ilerez is a tragic figure from Exandria’s past who is still relevant
A champion of redemption led to heel by the father of lies
Zerxus was not always a demon in the service of Asmodeus, the Father of Lies, and her tragic story is at the center of the Critical Role miniseries Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. Set during the beginning of the Calamity, the apocalyptic event that destroyed the face of Exandria a thousand years before the events of The Legend of Vox MachinaThis stream shows Zerxus during his life as a mortal human, where he was a member of a group of adventurers known as the Brass Ring.
Although the Bronze Ring did its best to save Exandria from a horrible threat and was technically successful, they failed in part due to the fact that Zerxus fell victim to the temptations of the Father of Lies. Hoping to reunite with her late husband, Zerxus made a deal with Asmodeus in exchange for his soul, but was betrayed by him and spent the last millennium being forced to lure more mortals into Hell’s service.
Zerxus’ deal with Pike could have huge consequences for Pike in Season 4
There is no simple deal with a devil
Although the original Critical Role stream was Percy who makes a deal with a demon and Scanlan who plays for Plate, The Legend of Vox Machina puts Pike in both situations. This is very much in line with Pike’s character arc throughout the series to date, as she has struggled with a crisis of faith that has at times left her stripped of her powers and blessings from her god, Everlight. Your willingness to stake your faith and soul to protect your friends shows that Pike’s loyalty to Everlight may be waning again.
Although the season 3 finale shows that Pike is still on good terms with his god for now, she is clearly no longer the bastion of faith she was in previous seasons, and this sets up their main conflict in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4. In the final battle against Thordak in episode 9, Pike claims that it is her faith in herself that makes her powerful, not her faith in Everlight. In episode 12, however, a blast from Raishan’s necromantically infused dragon breath turns out to be more than even the Dawn Martyr’s Plate can absorb, and Pike is knocked down in the resulting blast.
