Who is the Black Rose in Arcane?

An animated prequel to the globally popular video game League of Legends, Arcane has been a gateway for audiences into the expansive world of Runeterra. Although a large part Arcane focused on a cast of characters like Jinx and Vi struggling with the conflict between sister cities Piltover and Zaun, there were some references to other elements of the world. The scope of magic and history of the realms could be fertile ground to explore in the future Arcane spin-offs.

There are many nations and factions within League of Legends which hasn’t debuted yet Arcanebut this changes to one of the most dangerous in Arcane season 2. The Black Rose establishes itself as a powerful force, capable of unnerving and almost killing one of the series’ deadliest figures. It’s an ideal way to establish the danger posed by the group, even if their arrival could prove to be an ideal bridge for future stories and shows in the Arcane universe.

Ambessa has good reason to fear the Black Rose

Rosa Negra is installed in Arcane Season 2 as a dangerous faction operating at odds with Ambessaconfiguring one of League of Legends‘most dangerous groups to participate in the show. The Black Rose is introduced in the third episode of season 2, “Finally Got The Name Right”. An agent of the mysterious group (and Piltover merchant) confronts Ambessa and attempts to murder her. However, Amebssa and his lieutenant manage to get the better of the assassin by keeping Black Roe’s involvement a secret, framing it as an extension of Zaun’s conflict with Piltover.

It is established that some rivalry has broken out between the Noxian General and the organization, which even appears to be linked to the fate of Ambessa’s son, Kino, who has previously been suggested to have been killed by an unseen rival. This may even be the real reason why Ambessa traveled to Piltover, as it is implied that she is looking for ArcaneHextech and other weapons to combat the Black Rose. Considering that this is so far the only force that has made the cruel general nervous, is a strong indicator of how dangerous the Black Rose really is.

The Sorcerers of Noxus have been working for centuries

This follows the Black Rose as seen in the tradition of League of Legends. While Arcane is set before the events of that game, other ancient events shaped the world of Runeterra long before Zaun and Piltover came into conflict. In the war-torn region of Noxus (the same one where warriors like Ambessa come from), The Black Rose is an alliance of sorcerers and nobles who rule in secret in Noxus. Led by ancient figures like the sorceress LeBlanc, the Black Rose unites several of the world’s wealthiest figures and has manipulated Noxus from the shadows for centuries.

The Black Rose’s magical power, especially that controlled by the ancient and enigmatic LeBlanc, makes her one of the League of Legends‘ more mysterious and dangerous factions. They were even created in the game to come into conflict with military commanders like Swain, a character beat that appears to have been adapted to Ambessa’s conflict with the group. Arcane appears to be reimagining the Black Rose and bringing them into the show’s plotsetting up his conflict with Ambessa to also include his daughter Mel and, by extension, the citizens of Piltover.

The Black Rose Could Become an Overarching Threat Among Mystery and Sequel Shows

The inclusion of the Black Rose in Arcane could create a number of different stories going forward. Inside Arcane In itself, Mel’s apparent capture and rivalry with Ambessa could be a complicating wild card in the conflict between Zaun and Piltover. They could also be another source of information and experience when it comes to the world of magic and runes, making them potentially crucial to the stories currently embarked upon by characters like Jayce, Ekko, Heimerdinger, and Viktor. However, the The Black Rose’s connections to the larger world of Runeterra may be a hint of its true importance.

Arcane will end with season 2, but the League of Legends the adaptations are far from over. Change the focus to a different region of the ArcaneThe two UK cities could be the main reason for this kind of narrative development, and the Black Rose’s global connections could create natural bridges against the dangers of Arcane for the next show that follows it.
