As a direct sequel to the well received Dragon Age: Inquisitionfans are eagerly awaiting what happens to the various sidekicks and other side characters they’ve become so attached to. However, it seems that not everyone is on the side of good this time.

In the story that precedes The Veil Guardat the beginning of InquisitionSolas presents himself as a simple wizard with an immense interest in a frightening realm known as the Fade – which is explained as a place full of ancient primeval matter. He offers his services in investigating the recent tear in the Veil, which in turn leads him to come across the player character. By saving the player’s life, he becomes a powerful companion who is willing to help the Inquisition, and can even become a potential romance option for certain characters.
During the player’s journey throughout the game, it is revealed that the game’s main villain, Corypheus, is in possession of a powerful elven artifact called the Orb of Destruction. Solas expresses immense concern about the harm said artifact could cause to the elven people, given the fact that the orb utilizes the immensely strong magic of the elven pantheon, thus allowing the wielder to break through the Veil and enter the Fade. At the end of the final battle, the player character ends up destroying the orb, which upsets Solas to the point that he leaves the group without further explanation.
Solas’ true identity is later revealed in an end credits scene, where he is revealed to be the trickster god Fen’Harel. As Fen’Harel, he was responsible for creating the Veil that sealed the corrupt elven pantheon known as Evanuris after they murdered the god Mythal. This ultimately caused the collapse of the original elven civilization, as the separation of the Fade from the physical world led to the disappearance of elven magic and immortality.

Solas expresses immense regret for his role in the fall of the elves. He seeks to restore the elves to their former glory of millennia ago. To do so, however, he would need to destroy the very Veil he created, which would have disastrous consequences for the physical world as it would allow the Fade to merge with it, releasing countless malevolent spirits and demons upon the defenseless citizens.
Despite this, Solas seems clearly determined to accomplish his goal in Dragon Age: The Veil Guard. Early gameplay previews revealed Solas attacking former allies like Varric as they try to stop their ritual. It is clear that he has stopped being an ally of the protagonist to become a very dangerous antagonist whose actions must be stopped at all costs, lest it lead to the destruction of Thedas, despite his attempts to minimize the damage.

What comes next for Solas depends entirely on whether he can survive the events of Guard of the Veilbut if he manages to stay alive, there are many possibilities for where his story could go. He could look for an alternative way to achieve his goals alongside the player character, restoring the elves to their former glory as he desired, or he could simply want to atone for his actions in Guard of the Veil and I prefer solace in the desert. Either way, only time will tell what’s next for Solas’ character after Veilgaurdthe story ends.
