Sonic The Hedgehog 3 introduces Metal Sonic in the post-credits scene
Alongside Amy Rose
Like the previous two Sonic the Hedgehog films, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features a post-credits scene in which a character from the video games is introduced and teased for the next film, with Metal Sonic being the first to appear. The post-credits scene begins shortly after Sonic the Hedgehog 3 concludes, with Sonic realizing that his run with Tails and Knuckles ended up taking him to New York. Sonic soon realizes that he is being chased, with a glowing robotic figure bearing his likeness coming out of the shadows and trying to hit Sonic with a laser.
Although Sonic has never seen this character before, it is immediately apparent to fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that this is Metal Sonic, a popular antagonist from the video game series. However, Metal Sonic is not alone, as tons of Metal Sonic clones soon begin to emerge from the tree line, forming an army of Metal Sonics. While Sonic can take on a Metal Sonic, this robotic army is too much for him, clearly posing a threat to the blue blur.
Just as the army emerges, a hooded figure flies from the sky, wielding a hammer. It is revealed that this is Amy Roseanother anthropomorphic alien, with her using her iconic hammer to smash the Metal Sonics to pieces. Although this swarm of Metal Sonics is resolved, these are undoubtedly not the only ones chasing Sonic, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 likely following Team Sonic and Amy Rose as they try to figure out who created the robots and why they're sending them.
Metal Sonic's origin and video game history explained in Sonic The Hedgehog
He is normally the creation of Doctor Eggman
Metal Sonic is a rival of Sonic the Hedgehog who first appeared in Sonic CDalthough the character's backstory has been developed over the years since. In most iterations of Metal Sonic, he is the creation of Doctor Eggman, being one of the villain's most powerful weapons. Metal Sonic has proven to be just as fast as Sonic and much deadlier, with his precision and calculated decisions making him incredibly difficult to defeat. Eggman programmed Metal Sonic to have as his main directive wanting to destroy Sonic, causing the robot to have an incredible hatred for the blue blur.
Although Eggman is normally responsible for Metal Sonic, this is not always the case. At points of Sonic the Hedgehog video games, Metal Sonic has become self-aware, with him even taking down Eggman's army at one point. Although Metal Sonic is obsessed with destroying the real Sonic, he is never able to do so as he is modeled after the powers and abilities of that which he wishes to destroy. Sonic the Hedgehog always manages to stay one step ahead of Metal Sonic, causing their fierce rivalry to continue for a seemingly endless period of time.
He is one of Sonic's most dangerous enemies
When designing Metal Sonic, Eggman modeled him after the real Sonic the Hedgehog, meaning the two have many similarities. Metal Sonic is considered Eggman's most powerful robot, being equally as powerful and fast as the real Sonic. However, Metal Sonic is able to accelerate much faster than real thanks to the powerful jets built into him. Although Metal Sonic's artificial intelligence allows him to make incredibly calculated decisions, it prevents him from being as creative as the real Sonic, often causing him to lose.
One of Metal Sonic's greatest powers is his ability to evolve. Metal Sonic's artificial intelligence causes him to analyze every encounter he has with the blue blur, with the robot examining why he lost and how he can improve in the future. This means that every fight Sonic has with Metal Sonic is new, with Metal Sonic always boasting a new arsenal of weapons, strategies, and powers. Metal Sonic can also generate laser beams, force fields, missiles and more, this being the offensive side of his almost indestructible defensive body.
Another aspect of Metal Sonic that makes him incredibly powerful is his ability to copy. Metal Sonic can scan any enemy and replicate most of their abilities. Metal Sonic was able to replicate things like chaos energy and even possessed the ability to change shape, making him nearly undetectable. This means that if Metal Sonic were to encounter characters like Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow, Sonic would not only have to face his own moveset, but also the movesets of his friends.
Will he return in Sonic The Hedgehog 4?
Sonic the Hedgehog 3the post-credits scene appears to be shaping up Sonic the Hedgehog 4with the film likely following Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy as they try to track down who is sending these Metal Sonic robots. The addition of multiple Metal Sonics to the live-action film series is interesting, as this isn't a path typically taken by video games. This means the film series could seriously change Metal Sonic's power level and abilities, with Amy easily destroying an army of them at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
