Who is Gon Freecs? Hunter X Hunter protagonist explained

Gon Freecs is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series by Yoshihiro Togashi, Hunter X Hunter. Gon grew up on Whale Island under the care of his aunt Mito, but one day he meets Kite, a student of Gon’s father, Ging. Inspired by Kite’s deep admiration for his teacher, Gon vows to obtain a hunter’s license and find his father. He enters the 287th Hunter Exam, where he meets Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio. After surviving the exam, Gon enters a tournament in the 251-story battle tower, Heaven’s Arena, where he learns to channel his aura into Nen.

At Heaven’s Arena, Gon and Killua meet Wing, who teaches them about Nen, its basic principles, advanced techniques, and the six types of Nen. Gon discovers that he is an Enhancer type, meaning he can use his aura to increase his strength or energize objects. After reaching the 200th floor, Gon finally faces Hisoka, his rival in the Hunter Exam. Although he doesn’t defeat the clown, Gon is satisfied with the goal he set for himself. Now understanding the basics of Nen and comparing his strength to Hisoka’s, Gon feels confident enough to find his father.

Gon uses his skills and connections within the Hunter Association to obtain a copy of the mysterious video game Greed Island, a clue to his father’s location. Gon makes a contract with Nen with conditions to supernaturally develop his body to an age at which he can defeat Neferpitou. After exhausting all your life energy, Gon is in a state of living death until Killua performs a miracle to restore his friend. Gon finally meets his father during the elections for the next president of the Hunters Association, and spends time with Ging at the top of the World Tree, then returns to Whale Island to discover his next adventure.

Despite his usual carefree demeanor, Gon is capable of feeling deep anger and hatred towards his enemieslashing out at any perceived injustice against his friends. His defiant attitude and impulsive nature have gotten him into trouble with the Phantom Troupe several times, leading to his capture, interrogation, and arm-wrestling torture with Spidey #2. He is disgusted by the Chimera Ants’ wanton disregard for the lives of their companions. , immediately considering them worthy of extermination.

Gon is capable of unimaginable power when his friends are on the line. Killua is held captive by his own family, and Gon defies the notorious assassins and breaks into his home. To defeat the Mad Bomber and avenge all the lives he stole, Gon sacrifices his limbs and has his throat crushed. Facing Kite’s killer, an opponent far beyond his weight class, Gon essentially makes a deal with the Devil to reach the pinnacle of his power, and is reduced to a living, rotting corpse. This stubborn dedication and limited vision are both a curse and a gift.

The story continues on the continuum Hunter x Hunter mangaalthough Gon is largely absent from the main plot after his resurrection leaves him powerless. He returns to Whale Island, where Aunt Mito insists that Gon catch up on his missed schoolwork. Ging says that Gon can still produce aura, he just can’t see it, and will have to start from scratch learning Nen again. However, that remains to be seen as the focus shifts to Hisoka’s rematch with Chrollo, then the journey to the Dark Continent led by the Zodiacs and the former president’s son, Beyond Netero.

A pending plot could bring Gon back into focus. Gyro, the leader of the NGL, was reborn as a Chimera Ant with complete autonomy and immediate access to his memories. He is the antithesis of Gon, having grown up with an abusive father and only wanting to spread evil throughout the world. Having lost the nation he ruled, Gyro heads to Meteor City to restart his empire. THE Hunter X Hunter manga mentions that Gon and Gyro are destined to meetbut what happens when that happens and how Gon regains his power remains to be seen.
