Dr. Julian Rush’s first appearance comes in The penguin Episode 2 in the opening montage detailing Sofia’s time in Arkham Asylum. It seems like though Julian was Sophia’s primary therapist when she completed her stint at the iconic DC penitentiary. This was implied by a series of flashbacks showing Julian walking Sophia through sessions after she was convicted as a hangman, with the latter likely being the former patient.

The scene has intimate undertones, implying that Rush and Sophia have a relationship they morally shouldn’t…

As is often the case with patients like Sophia, the character is confirmed to still receive sessions with a therapist after being released from Arkham. This saw Rossi appear as Julian Rush in The penguinThe present day timeline, as it was revealed that his methods were the cause of Sofia’s Arkham flashbacks. However, Rush’s relationship with Sophia is teased as deeper than patient and doctor in this scene. Sophia reacts negatively to her past memories, which lead Rush to hold her tightly until she calms down. The scene has intimate undertones, implying that Rush and Sophia have a relationship they morally shouldn’t.

Given Rush’s apparent centrality to The penguins story and his connection to Arkham Asylum, many have wondered if he is a DC Comics character. That said, Julian Rush is an original character created by the developers of The penguin. This certainly fits the tone of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Universe. Although there are some Easter eggs in DC Comics The penguin And The Batman Universe is no stranger to established characters, the overall sense of grounded realism the franchise has established makes Rush’s original creation seem logical.

Despite his original nature, Dr. Julian Rush has an admittedly loose connection to a DC Comics character. The name Rush is used in the main DC Universe for a Green Arrow villain, one who is quickly defeated by the hero alongside his Gang. The only connection between him and The penguinS Julian Rush is the name, with the two possessing little else in the way of similarities.

As such, it could be the case that Dr. Jonathan Crane is named Dr. Julian Rush in this universe, although the change would be more severe than the two previous cases of DC’s name changes. The last DC character that Dr. Julian Rush has parallels with is Dr. Harley Quinn aka Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn started out as a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum for the Joker, which led to their romantic relationship that saw her become Harley Quinn. The parallels in The penguin Coming from Rush’s work as a psychiatrist for Sofia Falcone, as well as their implied romantic connection. While this is not to say that Rush is a replacement for Harlin Quinzel, it is simply interesting The penguin is drawing as many parallels as there are between him and several DC Comics villains.
