The following contains spoilers for Here, now playing in theatersHere presents the invention of the La-Z-Boy as a plot point, but takes some liberties with the true story. Here takes place over a long period of time, exploring the stories of various people (and some animals) who lived in a certain space on Earth. Much of the film is set in the 20th century, changing ownership several times throughout the century. Most of the film centers on Tom Hanks and Robin Wright’s Youngs (thanks in part to Hereaging technology). However, the story goes beyond the Youngs and their time at the residence.
HereThe cast of characters is complemented by several other smaller stories, focusing on the other families that occupied that space before and after the Youngs. One of the most fun are the Bleekmans, a happy couple who end up being crucial to the invention of a famous piece of American furniture, the La-Z-Boy recliner. However, similar to director Robert Zemekis’ other films focused on reexamining the past, the filmmakers introduce some wrinkles into the real story. Here’s how HereLa-Z-Boy’s story compares to real life.
The La-Z-Boy was created by Edward M. Knabusch and Edwin J. Shoemaker
HereThe history of La-Z-Boy is missing the true creators of the chair
There are some general elements that HereThe invention version of the La-Z-Boy shares with the real La-Z-Boy, but the film ended up changing the inventors of the La-Z-Boy to fit the film’s narrative. The La-Z-Boy was invented in 1927 by Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker. Two cousins from Michigan, the pair experimented with a reclining chair and ended up reupholstering the piece to make it ideal for comfort. This places the chair’s creation in various states from the location of its creation in Herewhich occurs closer to the East Coast.
The success of the chair gave rise to an entire company dedicated to designing and selling various home furniture. Despite the ups and downs of the market, La-Z-Boy chairs have become a consistent reference for American culture and are sold all over the world. In a way, the origin of the company corresponds to the average invention portrayed in Here. However, Here approaches the story with a completely different inventor.

Lee Bleekman invents the La-Z-Boy in Here
In HereOne of the subplots glimpsed in the film’s non-linear narrative focuses on the Beekmans and the invention of the La-Z-Boy. Lee and Stella Bleekman are a young couple who own the central house in Here before the Young family buys it. The two are portrayed as deeply in love during the 1920s and 30s, in direct contrast to the shadowy former owners and their more three-dimensional successors. Throughout his appearances, Lee is shown working on a chair he believes will revolutionize relaxation. This eventually becomes a prototype armchair.

After a successful meeting with a visiting manufacturer, Lee manages to close a deal with the company. Openly coinciding with the growing television market, dubbing the chair the La-Z-Boy. Lee and Stella leave the film on a very positive note, very happy with their good fortune. Although the general time period is the same, the true inventor of the La-Z-Boy is reimagined as a romantic in the midst of a very happy marriage. That fits the Beekmans in Herethe narrative of as a largely positive counterpoint to the more dramatic life events described elsewhere, but fails to reflect the real story.
How the true history and origin of La-Z-Boy changes here
Here Uses La-Z-Boy’s creation as sweet comic relief
Here takes the La-Z-Boy idea and transforms it in a way that allows it to imbue more 20th century culture into the film. Much of the film is focused on that time in history, especially with the Young family at its center. La-Z-Boy’s plot doesn’t feel out of place narratively in the film. Bleeman’s invention and romance are the film’s comic relief, with a sweet sense of affection permeating Fyn and Lovibond’s scenes together. It’s similar to how Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks’ previous collaboration Forest Gump reworked cultural events to fit Forrest into the story.
Some details of the real-life La-Z-Boy invention are filtered Herethe invention. In both real life and the film, La-Z-Boy was not the chair’s original name. A running joke Here sees Lee toying with some ideas before happily accepting the company title. In real life, a local competition was held after the initial success of the chair, which gave rise to the name. It’s the latest example of Robert Zemekis finding a way to use real life as inspiration for character and story beats in films like Here.
A young couple expecting their first child takes in her husband’s sick and estranged mother. Set in a single room, the story spans multiple generations, capturing moments of love, loss, and everyday life in the same space. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and featuring performances by Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and Paul Bettany, the film uses innovative technology to age actors and features a unique stationary camera perspective throughout its running time.
