Who ‘E’ Really Is and What His Letter for Summer Means in the Timeslot

NOTICE! This article contains SPOILERS for Time Cut (2024)!Lucy discovers she is mistaken about “E”’s true identity in the letter she found for Summer, leading to a big realization about her sister in Time cut. In 2024, Time cutThe main character of Lucy explains that she feels like her life has always been impacted by the death of her sister, Summer, who was tragically murdered about three years before she was even born in 2003. As they never met, Lucy initially only knows Summer through her parents’ memories and what’s left in her old room, which includes a mysterious letter addressed to her by “E.”

When Lucy accidentally travels back in time to two days before Summer’s murder in 2003, she finally discovers the truth about who her sister was, which helps her discover who really wrote the letter. The letter simply states: “Summer. I’m free now, but you never will be. You will regret this. – E.” Originally, Lucy thought “E” stood for Summer’s ex-boyfriend, Ethan, who her parents believed to be the Sweetly Slasher’s true identity. However, there was another important “E” in Summer’s life, whose real relationship with her was kept secret from her parents.

‘E’ is actually Emmy, not Ethan, in Time Cut

It turns out that the “E” who wrote the letter in Time cut it was Emmy. In Lucy’s original timeline, Emmy was the third person killed by the Sweetly Slasher after Brian and Val, but Summer and Lucy ultimately intervened and stopped her murder. After saving her life in the time travel film, Lucy realizes that Summer and Emmy had romantic feelings for each other, which leads her to recognize that it was actually Emmy who wrote the letter to Summer.

Summer clarifies that Emmy wrote the letter because they both agreed to reveal their sexualities to their parents.. However, while Emmy held up her end of the bargain, Summer admitted she was too scared and backed out. “I’m free” It was Emmy’s way of saying that she was finally able to be open about her sexuality and be herself, while Summer is still hiding this important part of herself and will never feel that freedom. “You will regret this” wasn’t really a threat, but rather a warning that Summer will regret not being honest about her feelings.

Do Emmy and Summer end up together in the new Time Cut timeline?

Summer kisses Emmy, but do they stay together?

Before Time cutis ending, Summer decides to officially come out at the party by kissing Emmy in front of her classmates. It is implied that she also confessed to her parents, but Lucy does not reveal when this happened in her final narration. Ultimately, it’s safe to assume that Emmy and Summer continued dating after taking down Sweetly Slasher in the new 2003 timeline.

Although Emmy was also killed in the original timeline, Time cut does not reveal the butterfly effect of his survival in the alternate timeline of 2024.

However, Lucy’s brief trip back to 2024 at the end of Time cut won’t confirm whether Summer still has the Emmy 21 years later – except that she doesn’t have a husband. With Lucy choosing to remain in the 2003 timeline, Summer will continue to have a supportive sister as she embarks on an openly romantic relationship with Emmy or, if they break up, someone else in the future. In Time cutIn Summer’s new timeline, Summer guarantees that she won’t regret her choice and will be “free” with the Emmy or on her own after the 2024 horror film.
