Jon Hamm's character Monty was hospitalized in Landman episode 8, raising questions about his health. Jon Hamm is one of the biggest names in Landman's cast, bringing their talents to Taylor Sheridan's latest oil industry drama. However, Monty appeared in minimal scenes throughout the first eight episodes, mostly talking to Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris over the phone as he makes decisions in the big city. Concerns regarding Monty's health have been teased throughout the seasonand they apparently get worse in episode 8.
Monty talks to Rebecca Falcone and Nathan on the phone as they negotiate the deal with Ariana. With Cooper's help, Ariana gets twice the amount initially offered, and the revelation of this matter increases Monty's stress. He monitors his heart rate on a wristwatch and the number starts to skyrocketcausing him to ask the driver to take him to the hospital. Landman's The end of episode 8 didn't reveal much information about what's going on with him, but Demi Moore's Cami has banned him from taking work-related calls until he recovers.
Monty's heart condition was teased during Landman's first season
Monty's health problems were mentioned in several scenes
Monty's health is provoked everywhere Landman 1st season in several scenes involving your character. When he was introduced on the golf course, he stated that he didn't necessarily like playing, but that he did it as a form of exercise. Cami also encouraged him to exercise, improve his diet, and removed coffee mugs from his hands to limit his caffeine intake. For the most part, it seems your heart problems are due to a combination of minimal exercise, dietary intake, and most importantly, high stress.
Monty's first dialogue in episode 8 featured him discussing healthy lifestyle choices with his scene partner. The brief conversation, which involved existential life philosophies about destiny and human autonomy, could be a foreshadowing of Monty's soon-to-be-death as a result of his habits. Even though the scene suggests that dieting and limiting his caffeine intake may not have helped him, the show may suggest that Monty's relentless pursuit of money at the cost of every other aspect of his life will eventually lead him to a premature death.
Did Monty agree to the deal because of his heart?
Monty agreed to a deal with Ariana that netted him $3 million
The revelation of the $1 million counteroffer is what puts Monty in the hospital, but it's possible that his health caused him to back out. If he were stronger, he might be willing to put Ariana on trial and ultimately destroy her for trying to take from him, but that would cause even more pressure on him. Win or lose, a trial could cause years of stress on public relations issues, lawyer costs and more. He is an extremely rich man and, at this moment, he would rather throw away his money than deal with all this.
It's true that Tommy claims later in the episode that the company doesn't generally try to save money by being cheap with family deals, so it seems like that strategy has something to do with whatever Rebecca and Monty have going on. It seems like they were trying to lower Ariana's value to begin with, so it might not be the biggest loss for M-Tex. The problems with the Cartel will be much more threatening in the final two episodes.
Will Monty die in Landman season 1?
Monty may be gone before season two
There are a few factors that point to Monty's death at the end of Landman season 1. Jon Hamm has been on TV shows for the past decade, starring in titles like Fargo, The morning showand much more. However, he has not appeared in more than thirteen episodes of a single show since Mad Men it ended in 2015. Hamm may be willing to lend his talents to various shows, but he hasn't committed to anything long-term. Having a season of a season Landman seems consistent with its recent trends.
Demi Moore was cast to play Cami, but she's barely appeared in the season so far.
As for the narrative purpose of Monty's death, it would leave a noticeable power vacuum that would create problems for M-Tex at the highest level. Demi Moore was cast to play Cami, but she's barely appeared in the season so far. Sheridan may be waiting for Monty's death to fully integrate her, with Cami taking the reins after he leaves. Alternatively, Tommy could take on a business role to help Cami support her husband's company if Landman is renewed for a second season.
