What you need to know before watching My Hero Academia: You’re next

My Hero Academia: You are next is finally in American theaters, and there are a few things fans of the series should know before going to see the new film. This (spoiler-free) information can help improve the viewing experience, offering some much-needed context on where the film is set and what it’s about.

My Hero Academia: You are next is the fourth film in the franchise, but it is not necessary to have seen any of the previous films to follow this one. You’re no further Is largely a stand-alone film, but it uses the context established by this point in the anime, so it’s very important to understand when it’s set. It also helps to have a basic primer on the original characters from the movie in order to engage with the film most easily. My Hero Academia: You are next is set just after season 7, episode 4, in which a non-manga scene is added of Class 1-A being split into three teams: one led by Bakugo, one led by Deku, and one led by Shoto. At the beginning of the film, the students are still divided into teams, and spend most of the movie apart. In the context of the anime series, which sets the film just after Aoyama is identified as the UA traitor (meaning Aoyama is not in the movie) and during the week in which Shigaraki is recuperating from his fight with Star and Stripe.

The movie features several original characters, but some are much more notable than the rest. First is Anna Cervino, a young woman with blonde hair who is seen captive by the villains for much of the film. She has an extremely powerful quirk, which the villains have gone quite far out of their way to get. Next is Giulio Gandini, a mysterious figure who seems to be after Anna, but is not working for the villains. Giulio sports a motorcycle and several prosthetic limbs that incorporate weapons into their design. He has some kind of relationship with Anna, though what it is isn’t clear until later.

Finally, there is the big villain, Dark Might. Dark Mait, as you can guess, is an assumed identity that he takes on during the film. He looks and sounds just like All Might did in his muscle-bound form, but is really a separate character. Dark Mite does not operate alone, and has several henchmen working for him, each of them having a powerful quirk of their own. The nature of Dark Might’s Quirk is a mystery for much of the film.
