What the Witcher 4 trailer means for the final game's ending

The trailer for The Witcher 4 shows Ciri several years after the end of the previous game, The Witcher 3slaying monsters like a witcher, just like Geralt before her. Of course, the game will follow this younger wizard during a new journey, which means that certain events from the last game should now be set in stone.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has several dozen possible variations in its endingincluding the many different choices made throughout the game for various side quests. For years, the fanbase has wondered which of these endings would be considered canon if the series moved forward with another game. And now, thanks to this trailer, the canonical ending of The Witcher 3 It's clearer than ever.

Ciri is not the empress, nor is she dead

Eliminating two-thirds of possible endings right off the bat

The most important revelation in determining the third game's canonical ending is, of course, what Ciri became a witch. This only happens in a third of the end of The Witcher 3since in the others Ciri ends up as the Empress of Nilfgaard or dead. While it is technically possible that Ciri left Nilfgaard after becoming Empress to pursue the life of a Witch, it is incredibly unlikely and more likely that this game will follow the Wizard 3 endings where Ciri takes on the mantle of Witcher.

In this ending, Ciri and Geralt fake her death to convince her father, the current emperor of Nilfgaard, that she is gone, so he will stop looking for her. This gives you the freedom to choose your own path and train as a Witch. Geralt even gives her a powerful new silver sword, which she can be seen using in the new Wizard 4 trailer.

The Nilfgaard-Temeria Alliance likely ended the war

The ending that makes the most sense thematically

The other main factors The Witcher 3'The finale revolves around Geralt's love life, which isn't covered in the new trailer, and the war between Nilfgaard and the northern kingdoms. The latter will likely be significantly more important in the new game, as In the decades following the war, who won and who lost will have major implications across the continent. Depending on Geralt's actions, Redania may have defeated Nilfgaard with Radovid or Dijkstra in command, or Nilfgaard may have won, allowing Temeria to maintain her sovereignty.

Whether or not Nilfgaard still exists, and its emperor still lives, is very important to Ciri's character, and the game will need to choose a path for its main story. In all likelihood, based on the brief glimpses of northern society in the new trailer and the themes of the Wizard franchise, Nilfgaard and Temeria appear to have made an alliance. Not only would this keep Nilfgaard as a potential threat to the protagonist in The Witcher 4but it would also tie up some loose ends with the characters from the previous games and aligns better with what Geralt would have done in the third game.
