What the Jackal is really using Rasmus for

The Day of the Jackal (2024)
came to another tense conclusion in episode 6, when the Jackal found himself in a very different position than where he was just one episode before. The Day of the Jackal The TV series is a reimagined and updated version of the 1973 film and 1971 novel of the same name. The series proved to be thrilling with electric performances from Eddie Redmayne as the Jackal and Lashana Lynch as Bianca Pullman.

The Jackal is an assassin hired to kill one of the most powerful men in the world, Ulle Dag Charles, before revealing to the world a new program that will make the flow of money more transparent. However, this mission is proving to be more challenging than the Jackal expectedwith him coming closer than ever to having his identity exposed, his marriage imploding and his new employers watching closely over his shoulder.

Did the Jackal just cheat on his wife?

Jackal just went on a first date with another guy

The Day of the Jackal Episode 6 ends with Jackal meeting up with a young man he met at the concert hall in Talinn, Estonia, not long before. Their interaction is extremely seductive and at the end of the night Jackal returns home with Rasmus to his apartment. The pair then begin kissing passionately, under the pretext that they have started to have sex. This clearly has implications for Jackal and his marriage, which is already in shambles.

However, Jackal is unlikely to have an emotional attachment to this man despite his physical act of cheating on his beloved wife. Rasmus' position makes him an asset that could be invaluable, and Jackal clearly has no scruples when it comes to doing illegal and immoral things to support his family. Before this moment, he lied to his wife about his job, his finances, and the fact that he killed people for a living.

MI6 and the local police are hot on the Jackal's trail

Bianca Pullman is incredibly close to catching the Jackal

Although MI6 is hunting the Jackal, they have never been closer to finally capturing this criminal mastermind. While Bianca and her partner were due to return home to England after almost catching the Jackal in Hungary in episode 5, they were redirected to Talinn, Estonia by HQ. Coincidentally, the same flight the MI6 agents boarded was the same one the Jackal flew on, albeit disguised as an elderly man in a wheelchair. With MI6 so close to capturing him, Jackal is probably anxious about the variables of this mission.

Furthermore, when Jackal arrives at his hotel in Talinn, it isn't long before he receives a knock on the door from the local police. This interaction, with the police officers who saw his face, and the Greater security throughout Talinn probably led Jackal to formulate a new plan. To protect himself and ensure the mission is a success, Jackal decided to reach out to his local contacts and access exclusive methods to complete his mission.

The Jackal is using Rasmus to create a cover story

Rasmus is about to have his heart broken by the Jackal

Rasmus is a sweet young man who works at the concert hall. Initially, Jackal enlists his help in retrieving his phone, which he dropped while scanning the area. Rasmus was kind and friendly, and Jackal asked for his number, which he could use later. Being as meticulous and careful as he is, Jackal is looking for ways to cover himselfwith a potential cover story and a way to gain exclusive access to the building where the UDC is expected to appear.

By going out on a date, drinking in public, and then returning to Rasmus's house for the night, Jackal is laying down roots for a cover story and building Rasmus's trust. He will likely attempt to manipulate this trust to then request a private tour of the concert hall, access to restricted areas, and potentially gain entry or exit from the building when he commits the murder. So while it appears that Jackal has just cheated on his wife while their marriage is in shambles, it seems likely that he has ulterior motives that he considers to justify and excuse his behavior. It doesn't mean it's right, but it certainly raises the stakes in what's about to happen. The Day of the Jackal.
